Clippers not clipping close enough

I have just bought a set of liveryman arena c130 clippers, and done my first clip with them.

I was very pleased with them, in that they didnt get too hot, but i'm not sure they have clipped as close as I would like.

I clipped with a much older pair of liverymans last year that clipped a lot closer and gave that 'clipped' feel, whereas these new clippers have definately clipped but left the coat with a slighlty fuzzy velvety feel. It's almost like i'll need to clip again in a couple of weeks.

Have i just not tensioned the blades enough? Or is it just that these clippers aren't a particularly close clipper?

They came with normal A2 blades - are these ok? I have 2 wbs with fairly fine coats.

Thanks in advance

Yer A2 is pretty standard maybe was the tension wasnt quite tight enough, i usually have a little play around on the first few clipping lines to get the desired lengh.:)

If not get some fine blades, just watch out they cut very close! There were jokes about using a bic on YP as he had no hair.

Says on product description standard A2 blades.

The horses coats aren't majorly fine - theyve only had lightweights on and theyre not overly hardy in the cold so have grown a coat similar to having 2 summer coats i guess, rather than a thick winter coat.

Sounds like you just need the tension a bit tighter then. I have liveryman clippers and find i have to have the tension tighter than the other makes i use at work.:)

Please do NOT! tension the blades tighter..........Tighter tension does not make any brand of clipper blade, clip closer, it just blunts your blades quicker and gets them hot.

You will probably find, that when you clipped with your older Liveryman clipper, you were using a set of blades which had been sharpened a few times. Every time blades are sharpened, you remove some metal, this makes them cut closer each time. Your new blades, if A2, in theory will leave 2mm of coat approx, when new. A pair of A22 or A2F will cut closer, by about 1mm. However it all depends on the angle of the blades when going through the coat. If you want to see how close a set of blades will cut, ignore the small top blade, just sit the large blade on its own upon a piece of flat material or a table top. Then with you index finger apply some pressure to the centre of the row of teeth. Your blade will "rock" forwards and be resting on the angled section of the rear of the cutting teeth. Hold the blades in this position and look from the side, across the cutting face you will see where the blades have rubbed and the front of the teeth will be un rubbed. If you check the distance from the surface of the table to the start of the rubbed section, this is roughly how much hair will be left if you put the blades through neddys coat at this angle.

Happy Clipping

Thanks Ian the engineer for your reply.

I loosened the tension and then retightened after paying more attention to the booklet they came with. And they cut much better. However what you say about the previous blades makes a lot of sense. I need to buy a spare set of blades anyway so may get the fine ones as well and try them.
