My girly is on boxrest at the moment and will probably never be ridden again. She's in her stable 24/7 apart from when i muck out. Anyhow, she's quite a fluffy onion at the minute and is sweating in her stable (had her tested for cushings and shes clear :) thank god) i think im going to have to clip her as it's getting to the point where shes even sweating in 6 degrees! She's not stressing i don't think as she's been very calm throughout the whole ordeal.
Anyhow would you clip her if you were in my position and what clip would you do? im thinking bib or maybe a low chaser clip (sweating on her neck, between frount legs and behind elbows)

I would give her a bib/trace clip if it will make her more comfortable.
I don't have a problem with clipping a horse that isn't ridden if it will make the animal feel better.

I clip my sec a that rarely gets ridden (lead rein at that) because i'm allergic to his hair when he molts in the spring, he's rugged accordingly & in at night so he is fine :)

I'd just take the underside of her neck off initially and see how you get on with that. If it's not enough then give her a low chaser.

My mare had a long period of box rest and like yours got too hot and sweated. I clipped her and she was so much more comfortable for it. It was also nice for her as she adores being clipped too, she literally went to sleep as it was done...

OH MY GOD! IF YOU ARE NOT RIDING THEN YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CLIP YOUR HORSE..... apparantly! :p

sorry! :D

i would start with a bib or chaser and see how she goes. if she is still sweaty and uncomfortable then take more off. just play it by ear.

hope she's feeling more comfortable soon... and if anyone starts on you for having a clipped horse when you never ride it.... well im sure you can guess what i'd advise you to say.....:p

haha people always do like to offer their opinion where its not wanted. Ive had people telling me that my horse would be better off dead than being on box rest and that being a field ornament for the rest of her life is no life at all.
I know not to listen anymore :p thanks for your post its brightened my day! :D

What is the ventilation like in her box - sounds as if it is poor if she is sweating up in the winter. Are you able to put her in a box with better ventilation.

Are you sure the sweating is not pain related? or has she been having a silly moment or two and wound herself up?

her box is sheltered but well ventilated. Its so strange because she's left by herself all day without company and doesnt sweat up or bother, so i can imagine her sweating up and getting stressed with company :) it could be pain realted come to think of it will ask vet, but im more inclined to think its just a funny quirk
thanks for all the suggestions ill give her a clip over the weekend (poor gal will be traumatised!)

I hunted my girl on Wednesday, then gave her her second hunter-clip of the season on her day off of Thursday, then trotted her up on Friday - lame. Since then she's had the vet and a scan and is now on box rest with a check ligament strain.

So - she's fully clipped (except the legs) on box rest and remains comfortable with stable rug usage. I don't feel guilty at all as she is a big hot sweaty bird and doesn't like being too warm. Do whatever your horse will feel comfortable with :)
