my horse has mites in her feathers, she has been hot shod which has killed off some of the mites and has some spray, but i am going to cut them off which will hopefully also help ( im dreading it because they are gorgeous ). i was just wondering if you do it yourself or get someone to do them for you? and if you do do it yourself how do you do it? thanks

I had to do Jasper's because of mites. I hated it at first, but now I'm used to it now and it's so much easier to manage!
I did it myself with my Heiniger clippers (They needed to be heavy duty as he has mahoosive feathers!).
If I'm clipping him out, I'll clip up the leg. If I'm just clipping off the feather and not the body too, I clip downwards from the knee/hock and tidy them up with a pair of Wahl animal trimmers (they come with comb attachment so you can blend it in). A razor comb is great for blending too.
Jasper went from this:

I keep my cobs feathers trimmed because of him suffering with mites years ago. After I got rid of the mites (not had them since) I kept his feathers trimmed even though I loved him with feathers. Over the winter I let them grow a little so that he has some protection from the mud. In the spring they are quite thick so I first cut off most with fetlock shears and the trim them neatly with trimmers (Liveryman Element) they look very neat and the trimmers are great. I do need to trim them monthly as they grow like mad. Hope this helps.

My goodness ..SO much better!

Did an Irish bog horse today. Go down the back of the leg and slightly to each side. Clip all the heels out. Then lift the leg up forward so the foot drops down from the fetlock. Run the clippers from the coronet band upwards. If you are holding the leg right as you get to the fetlock joint keep going and the clippers will then go off the edge into the air. That way you get a nice blended edge.
