Hi,

I April I bought a wonderful Cob. He is definitely from Wales but he is a lot chunkier and hairier than the Welsh Cobs I have seen on shows. His head looks more like the show Gypsies than the the show Welshies.

So whatever he is, he is gorgeous, chestnut with flaxen mane and tale, very rich mane and tale and really big feathers.

I now wonder in what style I should clip him? He gets ridden regularly and he gets very warm.

My friend always clip her horses on the body and leave legs and half head.

So my thought was to to as she does , i.e clip his whole body but leave the legs.

But what do I do with his head? As it stands now he has got whiskers and lots of hair underneath his chin.

Should I still do half head or should I leave the whole head?

What do you do with your hairy cob in the winter?

Many thanks!

leave him hairy as nature intended !! Feathers and mane and tail help keep underneath dry and warm..I slather on pig oil and sulphur to help them do their job, and to prevent mud fever.

However, because Shy can get sweaty, he gets clipped all over, except his legs, and then he is rugged to compensate.

Hope that helps - lots of different opinions to follow :D

I have a very hairy cob too, I'm just having a trace clip to start with. If he's still sweaty then I'll remove it all on his body. Love his feathers & mane so won't be touching them. Will do half his face.

I used to trace clip my hairy cob. He drag hunted fine like this and only needed rugging in the coldest weather as he was in at night.

I used to work at a native pony stud and the show ponies had full body clips leaving legs and full head on. It looked a bit odd but preserved the mane, feather and beards!

Here's my cob looking very gormless but sporting his newly done beard clip. I don't like to go OTT on their faces if they are living out but think a bit of a trim smartens them up.

I have to clip mine several times during the winter and do various clips. I do like a trace clip but I usually do this as a second or third clip.

My boy has to have a full clip at least once just to keep the yeti at bay!!!
