Have posted before, plan to clip the haffy (youngster) his first clip and ours!!!!!!! He will be hunting next season alot and he is a sweaty betty.... doesn't even have the finest summer coat now!

You helpful people suggested some sort of neck and belly to get me started and him!

He is fine with battery clippers on him now ( been working on it for mths lol) and have a few hours this afternoon spare, so plan to get the electric clippers plugged in, going to take him into the yard ( if dry) and get him used to all the wires, IF and only IF it went well would you try doing any actual clip as a practice for us pre posh clip autumn!

Or is it just too early? He is worked about 4 times a week and is very fit at the mo! XX

If you don't want to show him (he'd look odd in the ring )) and if the moment seems right, I'd go for it. If he still has a thickish coat he will probably feel better for it.

I know you are keen to get it off and it is tempting, but most don't clip until well into cubbing or just before opening meet (end of Oct time we start) because once you start, it is a long and painful winter ;)

If he is very hairy, I would clip sooner rather than later - one of mine is hairy and if you leave it too late, it is a nightmare to get off, will take an age and blunt the blades!

If you are more concerned about him getting used to it, just make sure you start on places that can be 'adapted' if he really takes against it (ie, not on the bum or back!!)

I agree, once you whip it off you can't put it back on again and having a 'naked' horse really does make the winter seem that much longer :(

If you want to get him used to the mains clippers i would recommend just plugging them in and switching them on so he can get used to the noise (they're a lot louder than the mini rechargeable ones). Then if he's seems to be ok with that pop them on his shoulder (without actually clipping him though) so he can feel the vibration and slowly work over his body so he gets used to the feel of it.

Hope your first clip goes well. You will have to put a piccie up to us your master piece :)

Are you in Devon? We went to a demonstration at www.clippersharp.com last year, where you could have a go at clipping on a well behaved horse - it was well worth it. It gave me the confidence to clip my two and re-clipped Saffy on my own but I knew that they are both incredibly well behaved.
We usually do the first clip in October. I wouldn't clip now.

I have listened to you all, I know rare for this forum haha...

Firstly hes not over hairy, and he will only be hunted not shown. I turn out to a high standard hunting ( not bragging just don't think you should take horses hunting unless they are immaculate, so guess I am fretting he won't be perfect haha!

Will wait until hes rugged then! Yes am about 9 miles from clipper sharp, thanks, will look out for a demo!!!!! XX
