I'm sure this has been asked many times before so I'm sorry

I have the Liveryman apollo clippers and 2 horses to do, one fluffy coated TB and one even fluffier cob. Currently I am only managing to get one full clip out of my blades before they start to "chew" the hair and stop cutting. What am I doing wrong?? I know I have a but of trouble getting the tension right, but I adjust as I clip and stick at what clips best. Is there another way??

Thank you for reading

This happens to mine a bit - I just take it to mean i need to groom a lot more throughly before clipping next time - his legs are usually a bit greasy and yucky in the feathers particularly. I have three sets of blades now and get two clips and a hog out of them before sending off for sharpening. (for some reason I never remember to send them off once they are blunt so now I have three sets of blunt blades and can't clip!)

Yes I had to wait to re clip because I forgot to send my blades off even though I knew they were blunt

Does anyone bath before clipping, I did wonder about the grease

I do think about it but its so cold - I think you are supposed to groom regularly enough not to need to - not something I can manage to do

i have the liveryman arena clippers, and so far this year have managed to get 2 full clips, 2 blanket clips and have clipped the dog (sheepdog) with one set of blades.
it takes a while to recognise the 'right' sound for the tensioning- you want them to purr really- thats the best way i can describe the sound.
i do a full groom on each horse everyday tho- it definately helps.

Just clipped horse this afternoon (very hairy now!) and recently have always taken him for good canter first thing to sweat out then hosed down and clipped once dry - works wonderfully! But appreciate only works if can stable to dry, keep clean etc. Friend who clips lots finds grease is the killer of her blades and horses regularly groomed/bathed before are best.

Ali im sure you have the tension too tight this will have a knock on effect to the motor.

I get 3-4 clips out of my blades but that depends on what type of clip and how hairy they are.

Grooming and bathing shouldnt really make any difference if the tension is right and they are lubricated.

the coat grease and the clipper oil make a grainy paste when mashed together with the blades. and this blunts the blades.proper grooming(like in books)will work the grease to the surface of the caot and then you can flick it away with a body brush.(remembering to use the currycomb every few strokes)
also you cannot make a clean horse with a dirty grooming kit.
(have you rver looked in other peoples grooming boxes?

Oil regularly, make sure the tension is right by the tone the clippers make when they are turned on. if too tight they will be higher pitched but usually cut and get hot quick, if too loose they mash up and sound clunky. i use lister neon and lasers and have managed to get 10 full clips out of a set of blades. they average at least 6-7 usuallly which i think is amazing!!!
