My brain is bored!
Just a wonder, What weight rug would be the equivalent to a horses coat? for them do you think? (like I say im a bit bored and been wondering!)
If for example a horse is in a 200g turn out unclipped and then you do a full/hunter type clip and the temperature stayed the same what extra would it need to feel the same!
A horse coat really doesn't feel THAT thick yet its said a fully clipped horse cant live out- surely you compensate with rugs at some point?!

nb- My horses are perfectly happily rugged/not rugged according to who they are im not asking what they should be wearing just a silly question ive been pondering (sadly)

All depends on the weather outside! Erector muscles make the hair stand on end and "fluff them out", so to speak. The colder it gets, the more air they trap next to their bodies. They're always adjusting to the climate, which is why rugging is such a buggar to get right ;)

I've always thought this after seeing a poor warmblood at my old stables who was fully clipped but wrapped up in 3 heavyweight rugs, a couple of mediums and a fleece when it was below freezing.

I always though that his natural coat would probably only be a medium - so he did he really need that many rugs on top??

Most cobs probably have the equivalent of a heavyweight on though!
