Clipping and rugs

I think that this winter we are going to have to clip our welshie - who has never been clipped before and has always been turned out during the day (in at night) without rugs. If he just has a bib clip, will he need l/w rugs, m/w? Any ideas please - he doesn't have any rugs at the moment.

Maybe just a very lightweight turnout for the coldest, wettest days?

I clip my shettie and my Connie type pony every year. They get a low trace and are not rugged. They both do really well...
