Right, I have a dilemma and I just cant make up my mind.

A lot of other horses on the yard, who do a similar amount of work to Chico, have all been clipped in the last week or so.

I have never had Chico clipped, for various reasons, but I am not sure whether to or not this year.

Chico is ridden 5-6 times a week for approx 30mins a time. He doesnt normally get sweaty but as the weather has been so cold anyway I'm not surprised.

I had a 45min jumping lesson with him last week and he did start to sweat, we had only done poles and one very tiny jump a few times, so nothing really strenuous.

I just dont know what to do though :o To clip or not to clip?

Want to do the right thing for him but just cant decide if I think he would benefit from clipping or not :(

Any suggestions?

If he's not getting sweaty with the work he's doing I wouldnt worry about clipping. Are you likely to increase he's work load shortly? If not they will start to lose their coats soon enough anyway- well if the weather ever decides to warm up! I clipped one of mine today and will do the other sometime this week, but they do get hot and sweaty and therefore take ages to dry off and I worry about them getting a chill as they cool off and dry. Don't think you have to as others are- our yard has some clipped, some half clipped and some not!

thanks. I'm not worried about following the trend on the yard, just having so many suddenly being clipped made me think about it as it hadnt crossed my mind before.

I think you are right though, I may as well just wait until his summer coat comes through (even if it means weeks of mass shedding, lol!)

unless you're planning on clipping all year around, I'd say its too late to clip now! I judge it on when the horse starts moulting, if they are moulting now, its going to mess with their summer coat!

I'm going to clip my mare out in a couple of weeks but she is clipped all year round!

he hasnt started moulting yet so think i would be okay to slip now if needs be.

id clip it all off then haha! saves the brushing out for the next couple of months!! your lucky, both mine are moulting already! and were demanding grooms in the field today!
