Horse will not let me clip his ears! Everything else, FINE. Ears. Noooo....

Any ideas or hints and tricks?? Tried desensitisation, treats, twitch (which I hated doing...) to no avail...

He is a right sweaty betty otherwise I'd just leave them be!

I had dormosedan prescribed by a vet for my horse as he was horrendous to shoe (now barefoot). He was very very very drowsy almost to the point of it being uncomfortable to see. It took hours for him to come round and he would not stop weeing.

He has recently had to have a lot of treatment for a blocked tear duct which required vets iv sedation and he is incredibly sensitive - the volume that should really only be taking the edge off him was enough for him to be stumbling and falling round his stable.

It's probably just be because of this that the dormosedan had such an effect but I'd be careful just incase.

Ps heard cotton wool in the ears can help? Never done it though

Can I just get this from my vet as with Sedalin then?

:D he'd run a mile if he saw me with cotton wool never mind anywhere near his personal space! Too much self preservation that one lol ;)

Haha! And yeah that's what I did - they asked a few questions about what it was for etc etc and his height age breed and approx weight. Then prescribed it and stated the amount :) think it's dormosedan that does under the tongue and not given like a wormer?

Why not just leave him with a half face? My horse is really woolly and I still leave him with a half face as I think it must be horrid for them standing out in bad weather with no fur to protect their heads. He gets sweaty round the base of his ears where the bridle goes but I just sponge him off when I get back from a ride. I trim the long fluffy hairs that poke from inside his ears so he still looks smart.

Has taken me 11 years but I can now clip my girls ears, to start with had to twitch her, but now she just accepts and as long as im quick she is fine about it!

I leave half a face on both mine as neither like there ears clipped, although I fully clip the body with legs left on it still looks nice, and agree about the weather at least they have a bit of protection on the face and ears if left on

I leave half face on the ponies, one is a very sweaty and furry Connemara and the ears being left on really doesn't make any difference ! has full body off and legs also left on. I do take everything off my other horse as he will let me take ears and legs off (when twitched!) as he has very thick feathers if allowed to grow, and the head just looks smarter tbh . I see no difference in their sweatiness when out hunting/ doing fast work and he will have a half head and legs when it gets colder as I have avoided letting him grow too much feather :p

My friend's pony would rather kill you than let you even trim his ears with scissors so no hope of clipping them!

Took me 8 years of being head butted, dragged about & rearing, but slowly but surely I got there. I was however the only person allowed near the ears to clip them, and I always had to do head first!
