The plan for today was to clip coblets legs out without sedating him because it is costing us a fortune. I went down, tied a hay net up, cotton wool in ears, magic calm and homeopathic calmer in, Carrots in pocket and clippers out!

It all started ok, I started on his best leg and I managed to do the front and the back of that leg with a few stomps about. Had to stop to put oil on clippers...went up to him again and all hell broke loose! Kicking, barging, stomping about, I just couldn't get near him :( so I now have a pony with only half a neat leg! He's now not going anywhere without boots on ;) I think the vet is out soon for another horse so looks like I'll have to sedate him :(

Oh and a pic!

Get some domosedan, it works as well as iv sedative but is an oral paste. Should get a few goes out of a tube.

as above - the gel is about £40 for 2 portions

from your vet!!

cheaper and better than sedating tho as you can use it when you want :)

I second this completely - it's actually one of the two drugs they use in IV sedation but you give it under the tongue like a wormer. Pop in you your vets and they should be able to give you a tube. I thought it was domestin - but I can't spell for toffee!

I did mine's teeth with it and it worked better than IV as no stress of strange vet being there!

mine konked for a good hour ++ when i used it!....

was lovely :D

only takes 30 mins to take effect - chuck under tongue and leave them quiet with no food etc and then remove dopy horse :D

mines a kicker and i had to bath her..... :) shes fine now as i carrot bribe instead :)

Yes, its a vet thing, i ring, xexplain and they leave it for me to pick up. Means i can avoid the vet for teeth etc. Very very effective, knocked out a horse stuck upside down in a 3.5t lorry tack room . Lucky for the owners i had a spare tube in my lorry. Back to normal in a few hours, exactly like iv sedative.

I always just pop on a twitch for my horse that does the same as yours- put it on him while he is calm, clip legs- removed twitch and still have a nice calm horse (and he REALLY lets you know if he's a bit upset!)

hi :) that sounds like a tantrum to me ;)
have you thought about getting in touch with kelly marks for advise or someone in your area that come out and help you , its just an idea as it would work out cheaper than getting the vet to sedate him every time as that hair looks like it would grow back in the blink of an eye

i had some success using pressure and release to convince a naughty big stroppy ID that life was so much easier if he just let me give him a hair cut , he went from "not at all , ill kick you if you come within 2 yards of me with them" to ah ok then in the space of about 10mins ;)

Yes it is a tantrum! He's the sort of cob that if he doesn't get his way he throws all the toys out the pram, I can Clio his body just about ok, he's just kicky about his legs and won't let me near them long enough to clip :(

I have the same problem with my horse , spoke to the vet who advise relaquine which is similar to sedaline but apparently works better .... He said give enough and you can then reduce it each time if he improves.

If he doesn't calm when using relaquine then opt for dormosedan.

Relaquine is apparently a prescription drug but viovet sell it without one, I even emailed them to confirm that they would before I ordered it and they confirm it was fine. Vet said needed prescription so would cost £24 purchased from viovet for £12 i think. Think dormosedan was about £38 from the vet and viovet needed a prescription.

I've not yet had chance to try mine.

Re this - ( the gel under the tongue)

I used it for the farrier, worked ok.

Used it for clipping my boys legs and it didn't work at all. The vet came out and explained that clipping is one of the only things that it doesn't really work for.
