Those of you who clip feathers how do you do it? I have a new horse who has feathers but not enough to keep. I have trimmed his but it was difficult to know where to stop as he was quite hairy going up his leg! I ended up clipping everything out below the knee and blending in as best I could. 2 days on and it looks fine, apart from if he gets wet legs then the difference is more obvious I was wondering what the generally accepted way of doing it was.

I just clip up the leg and then blend at the knee/hock, my boy is part heavy so had lots of feather! I do find myself doing it every 2/3 weeks to keep it smart.

It'll come with practice! :D

If you use clippers run them down the leg with the hair rather than up the leg and it'll give you a much less clipped look.

If the feathers aren't too thick I prefer to just trim with scissors.

I clip down the leg rather than up and it tends to look better and not as if you have just clipped half the leg :)

my boy has tiny feathers i clip them off rather than using scissors its a lot easier and looks better imo

I also find it's neater if you clip down the leg, I have the Liveryman element trimmers which have graders (3mm, 6mm 9mm and 12mm) they do a really neat job.

Yes, clip down and this seems to also be less upsetting (at least for my boy). I tend to clip slightly above the knee so I can treat mud fever.

Thank you Sprig brill question I am a novice feather trimmer too. Down the leg sounds right it gets choppy going up luckily my superstar lets me practice. I have Lister Legato plus not ideal they find it hard work and can anyone advise about going round the bend ( fetlock to pasterN basically).
