I want to clip my cobs feathers but her winter coat is coming through, will it look really stupid if her feathers are clipped but she has a winter coat?
Mine will be hogged and have her feathers clipped again for winter they have started to grow out and I am just not risking mud fever etc just for her to have feathers I don't think it would look stupid but I only say that because mine wont be doing anything but hacking this winter
Mmmm, just wondering - if you're thinking of clipping her feathers then why don't you clip her out?? Or mebbe a trace or chaser clip.
I'm guessing that you need to clip the feathers coz of an issue like feather mite??? I have to do this on mine, and because he has sweet itch as well I find it far easier - for both him and me - to just go for it and clip the whole lot off him! It really does make life easier; yes OK so you will have to rug, but then again you'll not have to be scraping acres of mud off every time you want to ride.
You can get clipper comb-feeders which fit over your normal clipper blades and which are very good for feathers as they don't clip quite so close and you may be able to get a good volume of the feathers off so you can see what's going on under there and get to it with various lotions and potions, and yet not clip quite so close as you would be doing else. I've got a Liveryman Harmony (battery) set of clippers and have got the tool that attaches. Not used it yet, but I think it is designed specially for feathers so you get a more natural cut.
I think if an unrugged native/cob it will look a bit odd with a massive winter coat. However if you're just hacking who cares?
I can blend legs in quite well with summer coat. Haven't tried winter coat but I can't see it working very well. I use a coarse blade on legs (although it leaves them very short compared to if you use it on the body, not sure why!). I'm clipping them once every month - six weeks to keep the look I like as well.
Much easier when I just dragged a welsh cob out the field and brushed it occasionally but I don't mind, her hairiness is worth the effort to look smart!
I use Wahl Pro dog clippers with a blade comb attached, and it looks fine, even on hairy unclipped legs. Takes a bit of practice to get the hang of blending, but it's worth it! I have to use them on mains power, not battery - they don't have enough guts to get through feathers on battery
