Clipping for others - are you insured?

I recently invested in a new pair of clippers, and have been asked by a few liveries to clip their horses. They would pay me for my time & overheads (£20 bib/irish, £25 trace/chaser, £30 full).

I would like to do this, to re-cap some of the cost, but I am concerned should anything go wrong. Especially with recent discussions about liability/claims in NL.

Others who clip, are you insured? What kind of insurance do you have? Public liability? Not sure what I would need, or if the cost would be prohibitive.

Thanks all :)

Hi Fleabitten T, I work as a freelance groom and clip as one of my jobs, I have insurance with Cliverton with cover me for all horse and animal care including liabilty. They seem to be good so far so might be worth a call. I do this as a main job though, not sure if cover would be different if you just do it occassionally? It is not terribly expensive though so may be worth getting anyway. Saying that I have been trying to find a good quote for rider insurance and shearwater seem to offer a good deal which I think includes clipping (didn't ask as i'm already covered for this but I think they did mention it on the phone), may be worth ringing them too as they seem to be quite good at tailoring insurance to suit a specific need.

That's really useful, thanks. I'll give Cliverton & Shearwater a call, horse & box are insured with NFU, so might as well speak to them too.

Hopefully they won't be too pricey, fingers crossed! :)

You mean you charge £100 for a full clip? Really?!

Going rate round here is £30-£35...

TBH unless the insurance is really quite cheap, I probably won't go ahead :(

100 euro, so is about 90ish pounds. Horsey things are much more expensive here in Italy eg., a wormer (Strongid, Panacur et al) cost around 22 euro.

yes you do need to be insured for 3rd party liability, and 3c care. if you nick an eye or do a tendon you would be sued! personal accident insurance is also advisable. your clippers and extension cables need to have a breaker on them, and also should be serviced and pat tested to cover yourself!
