This is with my compact Liveryman Harmony clippers with snap on blades. The perennial problem of keeping your grey/coloured horses comfortable in summer without them getting sunburnt 🙈. Ahem, senior mare did get a bit sunburned on her pink skin a few years ago after I did her summer clip with the usual 2.4mm blades. She has Cushing’s and her natural summer coat, while not overly long and curly, is on the thick side for hot weather, so it’s better taken off.

Now Liveryman do 4.8mm cut wide blades. This is just the right length to make her comfortable without showing any pink skin.

I’m not the most fastidious clipper, but I’m very pleased with the result after clipping her this morning. She’s much happier, too. This is about the same length of coat as many fine coated horses would naturally have. The blades coped easily.

I clip my Cushings horse with Covercote blades in order to leave more length of coat than my normal medium blades do. It definitely helps keep him comfortable in the summer. He doesn't have a curly coat but does grow a thick coat which then doesn't shed.

Your clip looks a lot better than my summer - whizz it all off - clip !

I bought some coarse blades for summer clipping and they were useless and didn't take a single hair off!
I assume my horse's coat is too fine so back to medium blades for us, all year round.
He is bay though so no worry of sunburn.

You may not be the most fastidious clipper in the world but this is a beautiful finish

I’ve always thought that the Lister Covercote blades are a great idea, but my full size clippers are Heinigers which don’t have an equivalent. They do cattle blades which left bloomin’ great tram lines.

I had a whoopsy once clipping my other coloured with what I thought were standard 2.4 mm blades, but which proved to be 1.0 mm fine blades. It was in the stable, and I didn’t notice til I was part way through and noticed all the pink skin - that was in the March and it took ages to grow back 🙈.

This just inspired me. My lads shedding already and has a stupidly thick cob coat but I didn’t want a winter clip..I was on the verge of doing a trace. I’ll go look for similar blades for my clippers!

ETA: I actually have these blades but they’re in major need of sharpening and honestly I’ve never found anywhere that sharpens them correctly yet.
