Clipping hairy cob legs!

My cob gelding absolutely refuses (without sedation!) to have his legs clipped... to the point where he actually reared up and kicked out. This isn’t like him at all. He does have a tiny patch of mud fever on one leg but it wasn’t even the leg we were clipping!

He’ll be 10 this year and I’ve owned him since he was 10 months old and everytime it’s a chew on... usually either involving a twitch (on good days!) or sedation.

Is there any way I can get him used to getting his legs done? I’ve been putting the clippers on his legs ect but he’s just getting himself worked up. The rest of his body inc his face he is absolutely fine with... he usually dozes off!! He’ll happily let me wash his legs, brush them and he’s fine for the farrier so it’s literally just clipping!

Could you leave them unclipped? If he had to have them done for a medical reason, you could then sedate and clip. I just wonder if it would be less stressful for everyone if his legs were left hairy under normal circumstances.

He gets too hot and starts to itch them. He’s more comfortable with them off

If it’s oral sedation I would just carry on with it. If you have to get the vet out then it’s a different story. Can you thin the feathers with a thinning comb without him becoming upset?

If he is itchy is most likely has mites and/or M&S. His legs are probably sore and the blades hurt him.

Maybe get him properly sedated, clip the lot off and have a real good look at the state of his skin.
