I know another clipping post, but I am interested to know how many of you clip all of your horses heads out and do you use anything like a lycra hood when they are turned out. I normally just do half faces on my girls, but am thinking of clipping one of them out totally apart from her legs, but I'm concerned that I am going to take some of the protection away from her face, so do I use a lyra hood or something else.... All answers greatly appreciated. Thankies.......

I always give mine a half head as you can't really tell once the bridle is on, plus she gets turned out a lot so like to keep it on for extra protection. Only horses i've ever done full heads on is racehorses which are stabled all the time, so never really been a problem.

I always do a full head with Goddy horse as it looks smarter and he doesnt care!! Anything that is just out in the day shouldnt have a prob with a shaved head IMO!

LadyMuck has had her face clipped this year which has really smartened her up - got rid of her beard

. She just has a rug with a neck on for turn out - I dont bother with hoods as I would worry about them slipping around.

I only every do a half head - even with a full clip. I just think it's terribly unfair on them if they are turned out and the weather is awful.

I have one that gets very woolly and hot, and is also competing all winter, so he gets everything off, including whole head and legs.

He goes out in the day and in at night, with a neck cover, and sometimes a snuggy hood with ears if I want to keep him clean for a show.

the first time I took it all off, I was worried about him getting cold, totally over-rugged him, and made the poor thing sweat!

He doesn't seem to mind being out with his shaved head exposed at all. As long as they're rugged up to their ears with a nice thick turnout, I don't see the problem.

On the other hand, my other horse has a much finer coat, and does seem to get cold much more easily, so I just do a chaser clip with him, leaving half the head on.

I think you've got to judge it according to the horse.

You almost made me feel bad about it there

He's absolutely fine with his HW full neck turn out rug though and he hasn't got a Lycra hood on or anything

I'd quite like to keep him out all winter actually, but I don't think our fields will stand up to it though

Don't feel bad, I would have like my lot to be still out, but once we had all that rain YO asked if we would bring in so as not to poach the fields, which is fair enough. I just wanted to know what most people did, my girl is happy to be out without a lycra hood on and to be honest I'm not a fan of them either, but wanted to make sure my girl was going to be ok......... So again don't feel bad.....
