Possibly going to clip Thumper this weekend (although secretly hoping that I will find someone to do it for me....).

I only every clipped Amy out, as I am really no expert, and find lines impossible. However, I only want to trace clip T.

Tips please on how to do it well.....

Nice sharp blades, be possitive & have a piece of string handy so you can measure down each side from the spine so you get the lines at the same levels each side. If you are a little out don't panic, your horse is never seen from both sides at the same time. Again on the possitive side..... you could be saving yourself up to around £40 by doing it yourself

I've started doing a variation of a trace/blanket on my two now, as the lines are much easier.

Neck off, do a straight line from back legs at the bottom of the saddle height (towards shoulder) then down from the withers to join up.

Plait up the mane so you don't accidentally take chunks out of it and have to wait a year for it to grow back

I used masking tape and chalk to get straightish lines on Chloe, but then did Meg freehand, and it worked better.

Hi, Didnt realise you had your own clippers

You'll be fine, it's not as hard as you imagine

And tbh who cares if the lines are a little off, by the time you have your tack on, most of its hidden anyway.
Good idea to use a marker. In my early days I'd use a piece of chalk to draw a line, but you could use a towel, blanket or something to hang down so you get it even each side.
If you are unsure about straightness, always start off lower than you want to finish. If you want to go for a trace clip, you could always go for what I call a chaser clip, where you use a line from the ear to the stifle. That way you dont have to do any of the fancy bit round the back legs

Take your time, have sharp blades and just do the best you can, at the end of the day you only look at one side at one time, so don't worry if the lines are slightly out. Oh and have a towel and bucket of hot water ready to lift the dirt after.
Good luck......

Just remember with a trace clip both sides of the horse can not be seen at the same time so if the lines are a little different it does not matter just cliped my friends horse (trace) and they might be slightly out but they look good!

Is Thumper the gray in your siggy? If so, draw lines in lipstick instead of in chalk! Works a treat!
