Hi All

Just wanted to ask a quick question. I've always had the traditional opinion of not clipping in the summer.

However poor Pickle is really suffering at the moment, he's still hairy and sweating just standing anywhere near heat. He needs a bath after every ride. I thought it would be much nicer for him if we whipped the hair off. However don't want to make his summer coat awful. He is prone to anaemia and this has been linked to his slow coat loss. However have regular blood tests and all are currently clear helped by careful use of supplements.

So do I clip or not?

Definitely. I have just clipped my cob who was has a naturally coarse coat and started overheating - a few days on from his clip you can't even tell he was done and his coat looks lovely.

I would recommend a full clip if your horse is happy with that, then there will be no lines etc.

We used to event a connemara pony who had a good native coat - read yettie all year round! He would be clipped out from late June until his last clip the following February. He was much more comfortable, recovered quicker and was much more able for the work. The only caution I would urge is if you have a fly problem where you are he will obviously be much more sensitive - we just used plenty of repellent and a good quality fly rug and it wasn't a problem.

We don't seem to have a major fly problem, he used to wear a fly rug at old yard where he was bitten all the time but hasn't at current yard. He has a good fly rug if required.

Think I'll go ahead after dressage tomorrow. He is good as gold to clip and is so horribly hot I feel sorry for him.
