Has anyone clipped this late and not ruined the summer coat? Wondering if it’s too late now. Horse had a chaser clip in the winter and the summer coat is starting to come through where she was clipped. She is moulting like crazy over the rest of her body and it’s really badly setting off my asthma so I am considering clipping her out completely now the weather is getting better. Some say it will effect the summer coat, some say it won’t...!
Does anyone have experience of clipping this late?! And not people who clip all through the year as I’d like to know if the summer coat will be ruined or not!

Sod not clipping in March/ April. I will be fully clipping this weekend. Im not dealing with all the hair and my boy is sweating up so much from just a basic low key hack its not fair on him and its taking me ages to dry him off!

Clip away i say :)

Ruin the coat for what? Genuine question as my native pony is clipped all the year round as otherwise in summer he can get too hot. Shetland was the same.

Lots of people say it will ruin the summer coat coming through and they end up with a course summer coat?! I’ve never seen it myself but usually stop clipping end of Jan and she gets such a lovely summer coat I didn’t want to ruin it!

I have clipped in March/April before and I have just done my mare's legs this week. I can't say I have ever noticed a particular difference in the summer coat.

I guess if you are hoping to do some showing, then maybe not but otherwise I would just clip.

Indeed. Not like anyone is going anywhere or doing comps/shows now is it? ?

I've never clipped this late before but am considering it for my elderly mare as my OH is allergic to horse hair. Im thinking of taking her chaser clip up into a high trace to help with the shedding of this awful yak coat she has now.

I tend to do my final clip late March/early April. This year it's already done as wfh means I had the time to do it, other times it's later in April. My horses always looks lovely. When I did bigger events, I would also clip two weeks before, just for extra air for my boy!

Clip all year round. The reason why show people don't like late clips is because the doesn't grow out in time for showing and that's all.
This. eg a black horse clipped will look like crap without a decent regrowth unless you cheat lol

You could always use coarse or covercoat blades, which won't go so close & so won't nip the ends off any summer coat hairs coming through. It'll take the weight of the coat off but obvs you'll still have the remaining shorter winter hairs coming out.
