Clipping in this weather???

Who is clipping in the freezing weather??

Im desperate to clip my daughters pony, he has legs and half head left on. I was hoping not to have to do it again but hes getting quite sweaty most evenings and taking a while to dry. So it would be better to do him. She does quite alot with him often riding him quite hard for an hour every evening. And she has a 11 mile sponsered ride at the weekend.

I keep putting it off hoping the weather warms up but i think im hoping for 2 much?!?!
 
well i'm clipping mine again tomorrow but he's already used to being clipped. if i was thinking about clipping a hairy pony i'd prob use coarse blades just so they have a bit more left on and make sure rug appropriately.
 
Hmmmm same problem, although mine aren't working hard right now, I'll be stepping it up in the next couple of weeks now I'm back on board. They have hunter clips atm, but may only go for a blanket this time if this weather continues. Think I'll just have to bite the bullet and get on with it, with another nice rug ready and waiting!
 
I am considering clipping again this weekend. I'm sure I'll get lots of evils for doing it, but it's got to be worse for them to be cold and sweaty for ages after working? If it warms up enough to hunt on sat (allegedly it is due to thaw), I will def be clipping sat morning, can't take him hunting if half an hour trotting in the school makes him sweat!
 
I'm not clipping mine until the snow clears and it looks to stay that way.

I made the mistake of clipping last year just before the snow fell, and then didn't ride for a month :)

If you're still able to ride, and can add more warmth if you clip then I wouldn't worry. Mine has been in the same rugs since he was clipped in November, I haven't added more rugs since the cold temps recently, as his coat has grown back :)
 
Mine's been out of work lame for the last few weeks (in fact went lame the day I was going to clip!) but is sound now so he's going to have a haircut this week.

He never has more than a trace so I'm hoping that shouldn't make him too cold.
 
So long as you rug appropriately whilst you clip they're usually fine. Obviously try and do it in stable or warmest place, I also have a bucket of hot water/vinegar/dettol to wipe down after I've clipped e section
 
Ah feel loads better now, hes been clipped a few times already last time was bout a month ago but hes just fluffed up and is getting wet. Will do it in the next day or 2 i think (although will also be preparing for evils). I have a nive duvet to pop under his rugs so sure hell be fine and ill chuck a rug over his bum/front end while im doing it. Luckily hes so good and small i can do him in less than 20 minutes.
 
the freelance clipping has ground to a halt round here .......... tho a clipped horse shouldnt get cold if rugged appropriately. and at least wont sweat providing you have a surface to ride on or an indoor school.
 
Yer our schools been fine, weve not had that much snow here shes been able to carry on riding and the snow melted within 48-72 hours. Snow riding was just a great adventure to her. :D Its still really cold but the school hasnt frozen its mostly rubber and they run the tractor round it so its complely ridable thankfully. Yer totaly agree i would rather rug him for been clipped rather than him getting cold from been wet and taking ages to dry.

I think i was just been a softie im not usually!! hehe;)
 
For the horses where the owners are managing to still keep them in work and the horses are sweating up then I'd clip again. But not for any currently unable to work in these conditions.
 
I stupidly clipped my hunter after the last day's hunting we had - about 3 Saturday's ago and haven't been out since!!

He's been ridden sedately whenever I can get out but quite hard due to not being able to ride on farm due to severe frost and don't fancy challenging all the cars on the main road.

Pointless exercise clipping him really. I'm sure he didn't thank me for it!!
 
I am de-fluffing Andy on Saturday as atm I've only been riding him for half an hour at a time as I don't want him getting sweaty (he's quite un-fit) but only doing a blanket

I get evils at my yard for just being there so won't make ny difference to me :D
 
Would if I could work mine but as I can't and the weather doesn't look like it will be better for a while, I will leave mine fluffy!
 
I've decided not to clip this year. With some strategic rugging in autumn, her coat isn't that thick and still looks shiney and good condition. She to me is in light work and only gets a very small sweat patch under the saddle, so no clipping for me. YAY!


However, when I had my arab x connie he was a hairy mary/ sweaty betty, so full clipped him over winter. Just put a rug on and moved it about when needing to.

Yup, I clipped mine about the same as was trying to leave it as late as poss to see if I could get away with it - soon as I clipped, snow came and he lives out so had to buy a mark todd underblanket - he's fine though
 
Mine are hardly sweating up, even with work at the moment, as it's sooooo cold.
Well see on Sunday after dressage if they need reclipping or if I can get away with it until the weather turns warmer and they actually start proper sweating again.
