Clipping - legs on or off?

I always leave them on, was just the way I was shown I guess! When I was training, the lady I worked for said never to clip legs unless hunting. I duno why but I've always suck to that, doesn't really make much sense when I think about it! As you say they are easier to keep clean if clipped. My guys spend allot of time out in the field in winter and I'm not really into these new 'field legs warmers' or what ever there called! so I leave the hair on the legs. I always Leave the front half of the face on to (make sense?.. not sure!)
 
I don't trust myself to take off his legs! not quite sure how I would do it if I'm honest. Plus my boy gets Mud fever so would rather keep on the hair to protect him as much as poss.
 
I would always have said on, but Spider needs the bottom half of his legs clipped to stop him getting mud fever, so he's having all his legs off this year ( Last year he looked a bit like a poodle

We've always kept legs on - it's their winter PJs!

Numerous reasons really - I think it keeps them warmer when turned out over the winter, gives them a bit more protection too, and I actually think it looks smarter - I hate to see legs taken out. Also Ellie is an angel to clip, but we once tried to do her feathers and she went ballistic! So I dont think she'd tolerate her legs being done anyway!
 
I leave legs on. I hate clipping so try to do as little as possible.....but even with a hunter i leave them on and front half of face too. Just my preference. Also legs look very fiddly and boney...i hate clipping over the boney bits.
 
Off all the time! His legs are about half the width without the hair, so he look ridiculous with them left on with a full clip!
Also the hair stays wet next to his skin, so I would be asking for all sorts of trouble!

For my new pony however

he will have them left on, as he will only have a little clipped off him, if any!

I'd leave on in most cases too. However I was always taught to leave hunters legs on as it protects against prickles, thorns etc?
 
I have to leave the legs on for showing purposes at I have natives - so clipping them would decimate their chance in the show ring.

Given a free choice I would always clip out completely, legs, heads, ears - I like the look of a fully clipped horse (shallow, I know)
 
I leave them on - purely as I think I would die if I tried to do that much on either of mine - they both hate it. Also I hate clipping so I like to get it over and done with a quickly as possible.
 
On , because legs are precious things and need all the warmth and protection they can get during the winter.

Now watch me end up clipping Attys' legs out for some reason or another

If i do a blanket or more Il take the legs off. I used to leave them on and still would if I was hunting or the horse was getting a lot of turnout on pasture. If the horse is predominantly stabled and only jumping in an arena for the winter then Id take them off as its neater. In a horse very prone to mudfever its probably better to take them off.
 
On and I do a half head, I really don't want to spend the extra 30 mins per horse trying to catch all the fiddly bits!!

Plus like others I think it provides extra warmth and protection.

My boy came to me last winter with just his legs on - he look ridiculous TBH - like he was wearing leg warmers

Depends if they have nice legs...hey I've got legs but I dont wear no mini skirts lol!

On a serious note, I said on, but I have taken them off before, really depends on the the enviroment you keep them in, the time you have, either can work out best or for the worst but I'd leave them on as a rule for warmth, extra protection etc

It will be my horses first time this year, so god knows what will get clipped off

Poutu hasn't been clipped yet, she had a really fine winter coat last year but this year she will have a blanket clip with the legs left on. She needs to be kept as warm as possible, being a TB, however she does need clipping as she sweats after schooling in the winter

everything else but not the legs!! his legs are easily damaged as it is without taking away the small amount of protection the hair might give! I also don't trim his fetlocks in winter havign once been told they act like drain pipes keeping pasterns a little drier so hopefully less mud fever..that may be a myth though!!
 
Ummm clipping on Saturday, and as its first clip of 'winter' it will be legs and everything off.... however every other winter clip i do legs will be left on
