Does anyone clip their horses legs at all? I'm thinking of doing mine at the weekend for the last clip of the winter. They are quite fluffy and I'm forever washing grit from the school out of them!

No I never have and probably never will, the most I have done is run the clippers down the backs of the knee or behind the elbow. I don't feel the need to clip the legs out, so I do a blanket clip or dealer clip or a hunter on my horse when it will be up to doing more fast work.

Can you not just brush it out or wait till its dry and brush out? I do use thermalux leg wraps when they get really wet!

Yes I do, not in winter. My boy has the hairiest legs and gets far to itchy with them on in summer and it's easier to keep them in check when clipped. I let them grow back over winter to protect his legs then the hair comes off around April.

I used to work with showjumpers and we used to clip their legs out through the winter, though not every time we clipped (usually every other or just before a big show). Should be fine :)

I clip my boys out all year round. In the winter he wears turn out boots to protect against the elements. He is out from 7 - 4 daily. I don't see any reason why you can't with yours :)

My pony was getting far too warm just doing light exercise, including her upper legs getting sweaty and taking forever to dry. So the last clip I did (a few weeks ago) I took her legs off too.
Also she gets dry cracked heels and it's so much easier getting cream on them when I don't have to wade through all that hair.

I do for the first and last clips of winter for my cob boy - he has long feathers but I bear the messy growing out look for most of winter. Then they get clipped off again in January (don't tell him he's having them off next weekend please!). But when they clipped off he gets stable wraps during the night to dry him off and give him some more warmth.

My other two I leave the legs on - one older Wesh D Mare who has very light feathering anyway and gets very minimal hair taken off, and a 5yo hanoverian who has only been clipped a handful of times and is due his first full/hunter clip this weekend (wish me luck!)

Thanks all! I'm still a bit undecided! I'm not sure I'm brave enough and think I'll regret it. I worry about mud fever but she's currently stabled 24/7 as the fields are too wet.

Clipped all year round...as he is a LW Irish cob with feather and as he is hogged gives a more balanced look ....plus he suffered the dreaded mite problem and gives me more to address it.

The little coblet has his everything off. He gets turned out daily, well he was and should be but my grazing is seriously lacking at the moment.
We find it easier and he looks smarter. He's never had mud fever and he's not a cold delicate horse. We clip him first quite early in the year though so he's had plenty of time to adjust to the cold!

Same!

Feathers are the prefect conditions for mudfever, they take longer to dry and can stay warm and damp near the skin. I take them off makes it easier to prevent and treat if necessary
