Clipping nails, do you?

Our 10 month old pup has really long claws but I am not sure whether it is ok to trim them. I asked my esteemed dog trainer and she said so long as you only shave a fraction off at a time it should be ok as the quick goes back then.
What do you think? Do you and what clippers would you use?
Strangely her Mum, who goes all the same places doesn't have long claws??
 
I clip my dogs nails regulary. I find that if you turn the bad upside down & clip them level with the pad I don't catch the quick. I do go shorter put always squeeze the clippers before cutting, if they do not pull back or squeal (indication of quick there) then I snip.

White nails you can usually see the quick (looks like a pink line (vein)) Black nails no chance of seeing it.
Have a stypyic pencil on hand just incase you to catch the quick, will stop the bleeding.
If you do catch the quick they do bleed quite a lot & for a while bt the dog will be fine honest! Though they will have you believe that you have cut their paw off!.

I also have a special treat like a pigs ear with me which they get when I have finished! Encourages them to sit still & have it done, though my two don't mind having it done & will eat the bits I have snipped off! Yuck!

I have the Mikki nail clippers, my vet uses that type but much cheaper to buy from ebay!!

Also when mine were pups I use to file them with an emery board to get them use to me playing with them!!

I clip usually once a week or look around a little, Jonna had puppies last summer and they had their nails clipped or looked at several times before one was sold at 8 weeks old. I've had dogs that haven't needed much clipping but I still look at them, if nothing else because they get used to being managed.

As K9h says though, don't do it without having something at home to stop bleeding with at home.

i just get my dogs done when he goes to the vet for his jags and when he goes to the groomers. i tried it once but i got it too far down and hit the quick - i'll never forgive myself. my poor dog just let me do it aswell.
 
I can do Xara's no problem but Blue won't let you anywhere near his feet so I have to wait until he's asleep but can only get away with doing one nail, so pretty much have to do one nail a night while he sleeps.

Reminds me of ex's dog old dog had perfect feet don't need touching, bitch had to be done now & again & ran off when saw the clippers coming out!
I had to pin her in a death grip whilst she squealed like a pig! Never had her quick clipped except once when she thrashed around just as clipping, silly girl!

I use the bog standard guillotine style clippers, only on fronts though, the backs seem to wear down by themselves. Like K9h I turn the pad up so that I can see the bottom of the nail and probably leave them a bit too long but have never lamed a dog yet.
 
I clip my papillion's nails regularly as they are white, but on the two rotties I use a dremel as I HATE clipping black nails. My male comes and presents his paws when he sees the dremel come out, but my wee girl is usually a tad more difficult to do. I rate the dremel very highly.

Funny you should say that about the Dremel because that is EXACTLY what my OH said this pedipaws thing looks like, just with a fancy guard attachment. I can't see how it is that much safer, if you file too enthusiastically you are still going to get the quick.

I think I'd probably have to sit on my dogs to keep them still enough to use a Dremel on them though.

Funnily enough I saw that Dremel thing on ebay and wondered if it would work?
Might give it a go as I am so scared of the clippers after making one of the sheep's feet bleed last year.
