Clipping nightmare + some electric fence questions

2 posts in 1 to save me creating two separate ones 😁

So the Vet came today to do the spotty one’s teeth (all great and still in good working order, and no loose ones..!) and then sedated him so I could clip him. All great until my clippers decided they didn’t want to work properly half way though! One of the screws had jammed and I couldn’t get the blades off start with so had to spray with WD40 and wait for a bit. I carried on with my tiny dog clippers which did amazing well but they were struggling with the top of his back where it’s really thick! Managed to get blades off and changed them but still they sounded awful and were clipping on and off - not sure if it’s the fan that’s not working but I used nearly half a can of oil and clipper cleaner on them and prayed they would let me finish. Result is a fully clipped horse except for legs and head but there are a few patches where he woke up too soon and a LOT of lines 😔 I’ve hot clothed him and that helped a bit but I was wondering how long it will take to even out and him to look less stripey! I wanted to do take some off his face and gutted I didn’t get the chance but I took my life into my own hands with the last few bits anyway. Two hours later and it was finished. I think I’m going to have to invest in some new clippers for next winter as mine probably need replacing anyway - they are 15 years old! 🤣

Second question - I’ve just bought a new leisure battery from Halfords for my electric fence - I’ve got an energiser and an earthing rod and all the connections for the battery but was wondering if there is any other ways of connecting it that are more simpler? I saw these, what are these for? https://www.ukcountrystore.co.uk/acatalog/Energiser-Fence-Connection-Cable-With-Tape-Clamp.html

Also if you use a solar panel is that better and how does that connect? I’m not good with things like this in case you can’t tell!! 🙈🙈

That is the clip that connects the battery to the tape. Most energisers come with one.
I’ve never used a solar panel one, but I’m guessing it’s pretty much the same connection wise.

You can just clip the solar panel onto the battery. Your cable that come from the energiser to the fence probably has a crocodile clip to attach it to the fence? Thats the easiest way if it doesn’t.

It should be relatively simple to connect the energiser to the fence and earth rod. My energiser has two wires with clips on the end and one gets clipped on to the fence and the other gets clipped to the earth rod and then the battery is inside the energiser. I'm not that knowledgeable but I'd thought that was fairly standard.

What have you got? Are you perhaps missing some bits?

Re clipping - I can't remember how long it took for my bad clips to grow out but potentially a month or two until they start properly moulting and have grown their summer coat for the really bad bits but just some lines should look better in a week or so.

Best to take a pic of your whole electric fence set up parts, then how to connect it all up will be easier to explain.

Im no good with electrical stuff generally, but fencing is simpler than it looks…sometimes your energiser will come with a picture diagram of set-up too.

thanks everyone I’ll have a go and if I can’t do it I’ll get some pics. The clip looks a bit better today now I’ve calmed down - it’s mostly lines that’s the problem but hopefully they will disappear soon 🤞 🙈

Your energiser should have 4 crocodile clips on wires. 2 connect to the battery, 1 to the fence and 1 to the earth rod.
They are simple to get on/off the battery.
As said above, take a photo of what you have to make it easier to explain what connects to what.

So I tried connecting the battery and it won’t work 🙈🙈 I think the problem is now with the energiser and not the battery after all 🤨 is it possible to energiser will just die or have I done something wrong? 🤔

photos above! Have I connected it wrong because still no joy! Does the energiser need little batteries in it to run? Or is it likely dead?

I think there’s a switch or a setting in it to choose whether small batteries or 12V. My friend had one of those energisers. Do you still have the instructions?

No I haven’t got any instructions as I got given it by somebody a couple of years ago. Intereting about the setting though - I wonder if it’s been knocked and that’s what the problem is! I’m trying to avoid having to buy a whole new energiser if possible too. 😬

thanks for that, where is the green earthing cable connected to on these? Into a stick of wood? And those switches, yes I’ve tried them but sadly they aren’t making any difference. 😞
Ideally a metal earth stake. I think you can use the stake it comes with, but the deeper it is in the ground, the better. I have a 1m stake (any metal pole will do).

Eta - Here’s the link to instructions. I’m not sure how clear my screenshot was) https://mans.io/files/viewer/606248/1
