Hi
I have am a novice to clipping and was wondering whether there was any particular rule. Do you have to do it a certain way? Go with the hair?

Also I was wondering whether you could give any advise on what kind of clip I should give my pony. He has never been clipped before but is fine with them as he has had bridle ways clipped in the summer. We compete every other weekend, dressage, showjumping, cross country. We also hunt a lot but not every weekend. He can live in during the night or day if needed and is has rugs he can wear. He is currently wearing one at the moment mostly to keep him dry and clean.

I would be really great full for any advise given.

If you've never clipped and the pony has never been clipped, I would get someone to do it for you!

I went on a clipping course, learnt how the apply the correct tension to the clippers, to ensure that they were oiled frequently! you don't want your ponies first clipping experience to be a bad one! likewise for your first clipping experience you would be best doing it on a horse that is used to being clipped, one that will stand still for hours for you to get it right :)

I would get someone in to show you the first time, it is not a difficult job but if you start badly it can upset a pony the first time, there are many things to take into account, being very careful around the elbows, I have seen horses cut badly there by inexperienced people, yet you want to get all the hair clipped closely it helps to have someone when you this as the leg needs to be pulled forward, it would be money well spent to be shown properly and the next time you will be able to do it yourself knowing exactly what to do.
