I have a chocolate Standard Poodle, Skye, who is about ready for a trim. I like the hairy look so the intention is to leave her shaggy during winter and clip her during summer.

What I wanted to ask was can you use human clippers or are they not up to the job? I have a set of high quality human clippers that are redundant at the moment. Or should I buy some dog clippers?

She is 13 months old and we got her last September so although she gets brushed and feet trimmed (with scissors) she has never been clipped while I have had her, though was clipped before.

Here's a picture of the hairy beast before grooming this morning:

I'm afraid I haven't the foggiest... but isn't she gorgeous, I love shaggy poodles!!!

I must admit she is rather lovely! People always stop and ask me what breed she is and never believe that she is a poodle, they presume they come clipped I think!

I would take her to a groomer, they are set up for it so well. The one I work with will do bath, dry, clip, nails for about £20 (depends on the breed/size/state it's in!)

She is groomed thoroughly every weekend so in good condition, ie no matts or anything.

I have had poodles before and always clipped them myself, but haven't got any dog clippers anymore, hence wondering if the human ones would be up to the job

Must admit that the decision to clip has come after it taking more than an hour to groom her this morning, it's hard going with so much fur!

Hi, being a dog groomer i would suggest not using human clippers on a dog, they just aren't good enough. If your going to diy then invest in a good set of dog clippers. Mine cost me anything from £200-£300 for a good set. For pets i use a number 10 blade on face and feet, hope this helps!

Can't be as bad as people asking me if my Cocker Spaniel is a poodle/poodle crossbreed.

I clip Jasper myself, the spaniel. I use my Avalon horse clippers on him with a number 10 compatible dog grooming blade.

My sis has a standard poodle - and she uses horses clippers on the most of him and has some smaller trimmers to do around his face and toes. She does the same thing - to leave him wooly in the winter and just clip him in the summer - he feels the cold too much to be naked in the winter!

We have 2 giant schnauzers and a springer spaniel - and they are all clipped with our horse clippers.

Wow, he makes Skye look like a complete rag bag!

OH and I were talking about our dogs today and saying that out of our five dogs of four breeds (Standard, Staffy, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Weimaraner) Our Standard Skye and RR Lola were our first equal favourites. I have had Standards before and just love their temperament and personality. I don't know if Skye is extremely intelligent or particularly stupid as she still can't sit on command! She either knows exactly what I am asking and refuses on principle or is as thick as two short planks!

My 1st ever dog was a Standard poodle she was gorgeous!! She used to come and get my hand in her mouth and lead me round usually to the biscuit cupboard!!

Skye does that too, she is happiest when she is sitting with your hand in her mouth, lol
