i'm going to be doing a simple bib clip on my horse next weekas he only sweats around his chest/neck and is very nervous and has never been clipped before
i have clipped before, but mainly full clips.
this is a really stupid question but how should i mark a bib clip out? im planning on just taking the hair off the underside of his neck and his chest, do i do between his front legs too or just leave it? thanks, sorry for my dumbness :P

Chalk can work to mark out a dark coat and lipstick for a light one :D

I usually continue back between the front legs to where the back of the girth would sit :)

I don't bother marking with a bib clip, just run up the windpipe and under the jaw, yes do between legs and also down the inside of the forearm in a long thin triangle to chestnuts as the hairy elbow bits will sweat, I like to clip so that the girth is included but no further back.
I also do inside legs and under the tail, this will not be seen but it can be a sweaty area.
My guy needs his face done and round his browband, so I use a quiet Wahl clipper, but he seems to enjoy it.
You can give him some sedalin, but best thing is to clip outside his stable and get him used to the noise, don't switch off clippers when he is reacting, turn them off when he relaxes [pressure and release]

I'm with Mrs D - just clip along the line of the windpipe or you could use the side of a piece of chalk.

It really depends on the animal and how much they sweat and if you have your own clippers you can always go back and take off more and more if they keep getting hot.

I have done all sorts of made up clips in the past depending on what the horse was like emotionally and physically. My last mare was a bit handy round the back end so I did a blanket but didn't take out the back end bit! I have also done very large bibs where I took out half the head, up to the poll and then down to the shoulder, back of elbow and back to the girth - sort of like the front end of a race clip but not the whole belly, just to the back of the girth (if that makes any sense)! I think you can take out what you like - you certainly don't need to stick to the old traditionals!

But to answer your original question, a bib clip traditionally looks like an upside down spoon so, chin, throat, windpipe (make this as wide or thin as you like), chest, between legs and back to rear or girth between legs, but as I said I usually take the top of the legs, lower shoulder and elbows too ..... ;-)
