clipping shetlands for sake of it!

got lots of shetlands on our yards non are used for riding and they are all clipped out with layers of rugs on.they do get shown sometimes but not till summer next year.why do peeps do this to them.there are about 8 and 6 of them have been clipped out completly!!!:rolleyes:
 
I'm with you, I don't even like to see their manes pulled, it doesn't look right to me. They pull the manes of the little shetlands on our yard used for small kids as it cuts down on the amount of time it takes to make them presentable but I do miss their Tina Turner manes.
 
ive had shetties myself but they were in work.the other 2 are been done today lol! then they all have lots of rugs on makes me chuckle.they just turned out in fields in the day and in at night.i think its like a competion between them all.me loves little wooly shetties.:D
 
Makes you think of the saying about fools and their money... why on earth would anyone feel the need to buy a rug for the average Shettie, when they are normally so good at growing their own rugs? Fair enough if you're going to be galloping them round the place, but if not - why not just let them get hairy? :confused:
 
I Bib clip ours as one gets ridden and gets hot and sticky and the other grows a coat like a yak and gets warm and ichy so they get a low bib clip.
 
i know it started off as a miniature horse been done and then before you know it they have all been done-miniature shetlands and standard shetlands.then they all appeared a glut of fleece rugs appeared and matching travel boots.before you know it they all been done pmsl.:confused:

yours are been worked but you are not stripping them completly.one of them on yard gets bath every week whatever the weather and gets smacked if it knocks its banks down in the stables.think they are bored owners who need to get jobs lol.
 
Does seem a bit bonkers doesnt it - I would only clip a shetland if it was going to be working properly and getting uncomfortably hot. My neighbour thought I ws very cruel as our shettie x welsh a had 'no coat'. I got him to put his hand under her mane and feel how dense her coat was and he was amazed. I cant see why any one would take of the worlds ulitimate turnout rug to replace it with an inferior man made one.
 
if they are fed, watered and healthy - who cares! would i do it? probably not, too much effort but they did and the ponies are well tended for so whats the problem :)

Agreed, and seen as they are show ponies, showing usally starts in spring when they still are shedding their coats, not attractive for the show ring!

I always clipped my sec a out in winter otherwise he wasn't ready for spring shows due to still hanging onto patches of winter coat. He was rugged, fed & watered and perfectly happy!

As the owner of an extremely over grown Shetland, Fany, it could be for other reasons. Fany is clipped because her coat gets so thick that she gets extremely itchy and very irritated skin, which she then proceeds to rub on every/any thing she can find and actually made herself bleed last year. So maybe they are clipped for that reason? An extremely hairy Shetland, like an extremely hairy Fany, may not be comfortable at this time as it has gotten a lot warmer recently.

As above, why does it matter so much to you, are the horses suffering?

My boss wants me to clip her horse out due to it being fluffy and she can't stand fluffy horses. This horse isn't in work but that's not the point!!

I'm not laughing, but I think I may have ruptured something in exercising that level of self-control, I want you to know this:D

I did say the average Shettie not in work... obviously there are some that may require a clip for various reasons, but I would say these are not the average Shettie but are special cases.:) I have no problem with people swathing their ponies in rugs of all colours of the rainbow, but that doesn't mean I think it's generally necessary, just like people who swathe their dogs in waterproof coats when their dogs were originally bred to be out working in all weathers.:)
