Clipping through the summer. . ?

My horse doesnt cope with the heat atall. . .

The slightest bit of work and he just sweats right up. I wouldnt call him an unfit horse as he works moderatly hard 6 times a week, hacking, lunging and schooling. And now being the summer holiday, he is doing more.

I have heard alot of people say not to clip through the summer as it interupts the horses natural coat or something or other i cant really remember.

I have also heard that if it needs to be done do it.

I want to do what is best for my horse but im unsure what would be best?!?!

Any help would be great

Bodey (the coloured in my sig) is clipped all year round as even his summer coat is very thick. I don’t show so it doesn’t matter. Rather have a happy, non-sweaty ned! Plus he looks so much smarter clipped. Oh and it all comes off.

im not sure my boy will be to happy about the clippers coming near him to have ALL of it taken of. . .but

He will probably have to cope with it

people keep asking me if i clipped my horse - i didnt! he just has a really fine summer coat!!

i can't even put a cooler on him at the moment because he just starts sweating!!! if i clipped him he would actually be bald

maybe a trace clip might be better?

our boy has cushing so we have to in the summer, but as he doesn't get any ridden work we have just clipped off his chest and tummy and even this has really helped him as he sweats a lot, its is sometimes a better option than taking the whole lot off!
 
Most pro jumpers are clipped all year round, if we get a cold snap then you can always drop a rug on him. Mine, although very fit, shows a few signs of sweat after work, I'll probably clip beginning of next week.

Ok i think i might go ahead and do it. . .fairer on him i would have thought.

Because at the moment im in love with his hairy mane will he look ok if it stays on. . it is pulled. . if it looks odd i can take it of cant i. . ?

One of my horses has her summer coat clipped for the first time this year - she hates the heat, (thrives in Winter) and has always been prone to thicker coats than most, even more so now she's getting older. She is much much happier clipped and I'm thrilled with her current condition

(which last summer was a worry)

My other girls does about three times as much work, but it naturally VERY sleek (didn't even need clipping in winter when in work)

I think it just comes down to the individual. If you think your horse would benefit then go ahead

I clipped mine at the weekend as he was too hot, and he's a show horse, I have no probs with his coat. He's coloured so I put his fly/uv rug on to stop him burning.

I also sometimes clip with the coat instead of against it in the summer so leaves a fine coat rather than nothing at all.
