Clipping Very Hairy Horses' Legs!

Okay, soo my cob's scabby legs are clearing up BUT I've got a dilemma!

Should I clip his full leg?? I've always just clipped from his knees down; but this always looks a little odd for a few days until there is a bit of regrowth!! He is beginning to lose his winter coat now but his legs are still very hairy the whole way up!! I tried tapering it out a bit at the knees but they still look strange!!

He has black legs the whole way down so it makes it esp. difficult to conceal the clipped line!! So my question is should I clip his whole leg or would that look even more strange? And would he be cold?? He lives out at the minute- with a stable during the day...

So any advice or tips on clipping legs would be much appreciated! Thanks

Is he clipped? If he is he'll look much better with clipped out legs too. He won't be much colder than now, if you're worried you could use stable bandages/leg wraps overnight.

If he's not clipped I would personally leave them the way they are.

He has a chaser clip atm yeah. I'm wondering where to stop clipping though at the top of his legs! I know that there's a chance you can ruin the summer coat if you clip this time of year?

Don't worry about the summer coat unless you show to county level.

I would clip him all the way up his legs, and go over his chaser too if it looks better. I show my horses, and I haven't done my last clips yet.....

To be honest, if I were you, I would clip him out fully, it will save all that moulting and hair on everything! You can always put a thicker rug on him at night if you think he is chilly!

If you do clip his legs off, cut off the excess hair with scissors, makes life eaiser

I am going to be clipping my horses legs out soon - he has 4 whites, should I just clip the white then do you think? They are up to his knees.

Im not sure really! Though I always assumed that it's easier to hide the clipping line on horses with white stockings! It's so obvious with mine! lol Id say try clipping just the whites nd see what you think-

Clip up to the knee as normal and then turn the clippers the other way and gently clip above the knee so you are clipping towards the floor and you can tidy and blend in the clip line nicely by doing it like this.

I have recently had the same dilema, in the end we clipped everything off and my horse looks fab. Personally I take everything off.

I have a cob who is heavily feathered, i normally leave them in the winter. However this winter took all feathers off, decided to fully clip body and legs. Result was a very smart looking horse and very easy to maintain.
Would recomment that course of action to anyone - even managed to get her to live out fully clipped until it got colder.

I clip Jacks body in Sept and Dec and Feb but leave the hairy legs to protect against mud fever, and mane until early summer (end may) then its everything off all over and on with the fly rug to keep the midges at bay. I love the various different looks he has throughout the year!
