Clipping very late

My horse has an extraordinarily thick coat (he's Icelandic). He has gone through the Winter with a chaser clip but with this early and very warm Spring he is really struggling. He has barely started to moult but his Summer coat is coming through on his neck and shoulders.

He's got a lot of work coming up in the next four weeks, and on a fun ride yesterday he was very, very hot. Do I bite the bite the bullet and clip now? I'd like to take his neck off completely and take his belly line much higher but am worried about screwing up his Summer coat. He's black but his Winter coat undercoat is cream so he has the potential to look super ridiculous...
 
unless you want to show him, i would personally bite the bullet, i would prefer my horse to maybe look slightly stupid for a couple of weeks, rather than getting to hot as i would much prefer my horse to be comfortable.

ETS: I would also take it all off, personally as then it is more likely to come through as a matching summer coat rather than being bitty for a long time.

The horse I share is having a neck/belly clip next week as being black he's just getting too hot even though he's moulting xx
 
Personally I'd take everything off, that way you will have no stripes. I did my shetland and he is far more comfortable.

Too late! I clipped him today. He is now a black and taupe horse, looks fairly ridiculous but is much more comfortable.

Great tip though, I'll remember that for next time, thanks :-)
