that has been out in the rain today and had half an hour or so in a stable... is it possible (got a pro to clip him)... needs sedating tho so vet coming out, and I have to be there as vet wont do it without me, so has to be today.

You really need to do everything in your power to get him dry, IMO - I clip for other people and will not do a horse that is even slightly damp. I know someone who clipped a soggy horse and knackered her clippers doing it. If the person coming to clip is using his/her own clippers I think you might need to let them know in advance, so they can decide if they want to go ahead. If they don't, then at least you can save the vet's call out fee too and reschedule for another day.

they are my clippers... I cant leave work an earlier than I am doing, neither is there anyone available to bring him in.

I would still let the person know tbh, they might not want to do it and then you have both wasted your time. On the other hand they might be fine about it - I would rather know if it was me

I won't clip a wet or damp horse - hard work and blades go blunt really quickly, and get caught in the hair.

If I am doing mine, they are in the night before and thoroughly cleaned up.

If clipping for someone on the yard, I tell them if they ride and get sweaty before I clip, forget it for that day. I expect the horse to be presented completely dry and well groomed.

I would rub with towels and then put on a fleece and a thick rug to get the body heat drying him out as quickly as possible. If you have another fleece, swop the damp one after about 30 mins.

I wouldn't clip a damp horse! It's a hard job and really bad for the clippers - both the blades and the motor. If I was the pro I'd appreciate being told the state of the horse and allowed to make a decision...

If it has to be done today, get out your towels, rugs, even hairdriers!!

I'd cancel. The horse will be wet and filthy and in no condition to be clipped.

Ditto...nothing worse than clipping a mucky oss, I'd cancel and prepaire your horse for another time, when everything is going in you, your horses and the clipper person's favour.

unfortunatly some of it has to come off today... going sj on sunday and hairy horse sweats up badly. if he didnt need sedating it wouldnt be a problem

Oh right, doesnt he sweat up badly when your exersising him then on a daily basis or is it from traveling/excitement of being at an event?

Is he wet from a leaking rug or from being out unrugged?

If he's already damp (and perhaps dirty) and you had time then could you not give him a quick warm bath with a mild shampoo and dry him off as much as you can?

Hope it all goes well

he will have wet neck from being turned out in a rug without a hood. I would have time to give his neck a quick scrub, and by the time his body was clipped it wouldnt be to soggy, but he wouldnt have totally dried out (hes very hairy)

he sweats up when riding at home, hence I havent been doing to much with him, but will need clipping for the sj, else he will be wringing wet for ages afterwards.

Not if wet, no - a person I know did this and unbeknownst to her there was a lose wire on the (just serviced) clippers and they both got a nasty shock - horse was destroyed
