This is all new to me.
Having had a TB, that never really got a winter coat it was never needed to clip.

I am now soo out of the plot with anything like this.

So now being a custodian of a little black woolley pony, was wondering what clips and for what purpose you all use?

Hope this makes sense

i do a hunter clip... as the name.. over the winter i hunt.. :D:o and so i like to keep the legs on for protection and saddle patch,... if i was competing more like i was last year i was showing and did a full clip...

my other boi had a trace clip, purley because he is living out and i just hack him occasionaly as he is coming back into work veryyyy slowlyy!

blanket is for inbetween these reasons.. if the horse gets sweaty but not exercised hard

its all a matter of personal choice i thinnk.. and if you have 5 rugs to snug them up in in the cold nights!!

i think i understand what u mean!!

when my little wooly pony got too wooly and sweaty we used to just trace clip to under the tummy just so she didnt get as warm and sweaty - she was in minimal work.

then when i started to hunt her she had a blanket clip so she hed less coat but still some on her back.

nowadays i blanket clip all 4 of mine for first clip - and then i fully clip them as the last clip just so it saves all of the malting later on!! And then just rug up if needs be!!

I have just fully clipped my highland mare i know its late but she has been off work all winter and when she came back into work was covered in sweat every time i rode so had no choice.

I wouldn't even think about clipping your new pony at the moment, as if he is a bit lively now, he will be even livelier clipped! If in the long term he gets to the stage where he is doing more serious work - hunting, jumping competitions etc, then you might want to take a little off. Start with a bib clip on the underside of the neck and front of chest and see how that goes. If you need a bit more then you could progress to a trace clip.

I must say my daughter's first and second ponies were never clipped at all, and the second one did Pony Club rallies and little competitions unclipped. Just means a little extra time and care drying them off after work.

Only one of mine is clipped because she gets really really hot, she`s got a hunter clip (was going to be a blanket but I messed it up), she`s not in hard work but it keeps her cool and alot more comfortable. She`s also quite tubby so i wanted to kick start her weight loss and she`s been in a medium rug most of winter, using heavy ones when its been snowing and below -1...somehow she managed to put on 30kgs :D

I normally do a full clip all winter- well I call it a full clip but its a hunter clip I suppose- legs on, face bridle line, and a neat little oblong for the saddle patch. But this year i did blanket clips for the first clip as thought it would keep them warmer if we had snow/ice- which we did!! and then did the full clips in January.

I've been lucky that I've only had to clip mine twice this year- October and beginning of January.

Years ago my (wooly!) pony had a blanket clip when she was in light work (i used to SJ her) and when she was competing and in hard work she had a full clip.

You know your pony the best, and if they are in plenty of work and are getting hot it's always best to clip them i think as it stops them losing condition or potentially getting a chill or colicy - maybe start with a low trace clip, see how they go with that and then if they were still getting hot you could take more off- but you can't stick it back on if you take too much off!!....
