Just aquired a new pony that im schooling but he is soooo furry and after about 10 mins of work he is really sweaty and hot because of his coat! I really want to clip him but he has started moulting, ive been told you shouldnt clip if they are moulting already, what would all you guys suggest i should do? Leave it and wait for him moult or just whack the whole lot off
Oh and the owner has said that if i want to clip him i can she doesnt mind as he has been clipped before so its up to me really

wow, none of ours have started moulting, the joy of warmer weather I would be tempted to whack it all off. I took mine off yesterday (not moulting, won't be till at least april) and my instructor said I should be brave and do him end of march if necessary- was very surprised at that!

If you need to work him, clip him unless she is planning on doing some serious showing with him.

I know what you mean - new horse, more work & moulting! I'm not 100% as to what I should do either? I would think for his own comfort I should go ahead & clip.

or...... you could go over him with one of those tail-rake thingies to thin it out a bit if he is really woolley.

I've just re-done my pony's blanket clip and he had just started to shed. It had to be done though, he really sweats and was trying to roll in school after lesson on Friday as so wet. However, we don't show so don't have to worry about his summer coat.
