I went to view a nice cob at weekend seems good for me in every way other than i really want to clip him up - hes a v hairy monster

When is the best time to clip? sorry if it is a bit of a silly question but i'd rather ask than not know :o

Thanks WellSat i wasn't sure whether there were specific times of the year which you clipped.
I assume it depends on horse and keep a good supply of cosy rugs for winter and a light fleece for summer?

Thanks :D

Many used to say not to clip after the last week in January because of affecting the growth of the summer coat but tbh I've seen horses clipped in November have a clip showing still in summer, and some unclipped horses don't grow a nice summer coat at all!!!

My boy is clipped all year round as he gets hairy so this keeps him comfy and saves him getting all sweaty when worked.

Traditionally I would always do the first clip in October, second clip at Christmas time and if necessary a third clip in February. This was for our hunt horses though, who were in hard work throughout the winter and turned away in summer.

Just clip according to work load, and see how you get on. If he's get sweaty regularly then whip a bit more off next time :)

I think this is what i was thinking of i remember someone told me something similar to do it in stages or at set times (if that makes sense)

hes v unfit at the moment he sweats after most of the work he does tbh :) im desperate to lop it all off looks scruffy and hes a beautiful horse. :)
