I heard somewhere that you do the last winter clip (full Clip) before they start moulting. Is this true ?

H lives out and all winter he has a half clip and I normally full clip him end of feb, but he is moulting already !!!

When do you do your last clips for the winter ?

Many Thanks

I clipped my horse today as she is getting too hot when ridden - hoping it will look ok when her summer coat comes through. She was clipped at the beginning of november and it had grown so much you could hardly tell that she had been clipped.

Clipping season is normally oct-feb. I have never heard to do a full clip on your last clip, and I'm a freelance groom and clipping service. It doesn't matter what clip your horse has on its last clip as they will moult the rest out anyway. I suppose it stops the itching. Maybe your horse is to hot and that's why its moulting? I wouldn't leave it any later than feb to do your last clip! The only other reason some people clip full the last time as some horses get bleached in the sun and you can see the original clip for a few weeks into there summer coat. But it soon disappears. Hope this helps

I clip as late as April, my horse is a very slow moulter. Left to his own devices his summer coat comes through late May, early June, then his winter coat starts to come through in September. I show and his summer coat is always shiny!
