hi. it is the beginning of march now and am wondering if its to late to clip my horse. she is still very hairy and loosing a little bit of hair. Pleople have been telling me different things. any advise very welcome. thanx. Vicky

Depends..if it is a native and you want to show, then now would not be a good time. If showing is of no interest to you and the horse is hot, then why not? I have had horses I have clipped all the year round

blacky's due for a clip in a few weeks

Sorry to hijack this post but I am also looking for some advice on clipping.
My horse had an operation at the beginning of January and had to have most of one of this front legs shaved. Although it is growing back slowly, I don't think it will be back to normal by the time I want to show him in Working Hunter Classes.

So, do I leave it and hope it grows out or give him a full clip to even everything out? Someone on the yard told me tonight that if I clipped him now I would have to carry on doing it all summer as it will ruin his coat!!! Any thoughts?

Aww thats brill thanx so much. one more question. How clean do the horses have to be before clipping, do they need a bath or just a good groom? x

have heard that clipping after early febuary cna mess up their coat, no need to clip all year round though, will grow back, but slowly, what i did this winter, was rug my N F up quite alot, and that kept her coat fine throughout winter an dshe never got that hairy, so she looks like she has her spring coat already, though she is wtill sheading a bit. personally, although myne is getting a bit hot due to an increased amount of work, i wont be clipping and will let it fall out naturally, she is also getting fitter so it isnt her coat that is making her hot, just the work

Mess up their coat? All it will do is not give you a show condition coat, so unless you are a showing bod it really matters not! Just to add, I am not clipping mine because she gets hot (far from it) I am clipping because the clip she has is incredibly naff and you cannot focus on her whole body work properly - total and utter vanity! I have clipped in the summer a few times when my horses are working hard, but again, I do not show. I am thoroughly against over rugging horses for a show coat although I understand it sometimes DOES need to be done. Personally wouldn't evne have a rug on a native, but thats me.

Depends, personally I just groom, but if it is caked in mud then a bath may be in order BUT the horse must be completely dry before clipping.

IILWANF - what do you mean you would love to see me turn him out without a rug??

have u ever used a set of clippers called livery men harmony clippers. i bought them today because they are alot quiter than the rest, my horse doesnt like the sound. they are smaller than all the others i looked at. does this mean they will not clip as well as the others?
