When do you stop? I was told donkeys years ago that you shouldn't clip after January as it prevents there summer coat growing through properly?
But then I was at a yard the other day who plans to fully clip there show horses (as in head body legs the lot) as this makes there coats nicer for the summer and makes there coats grow through better? I'm confused
What do you all say ? ?

I don't usually clip after first few weeks of Jan but my RI told me that you can clip up until around mid-Feb  Another confused one, your not alone!

Oh that's okay then! I'm not the only one, my horse is really hairy and needs clipping but didn't want to do it if his summer coat didn't come through nicely as was planning to do some showing in the summer!

I usually do last proper clip by mid Feb, but that does depend on what sort of weather the end of Jan & beginning of Feb has been. Otherwise end of Jan. I will use a pair of blades that are due for sharpening to skim over if there are any long straggly hairs right into march though.

If I was planning to show early in the season, I would do a full clip - legs off as well, to avoid lingering lines. I've always been happy to clip well into the start of the new year, mainly because I am very lazy and hate dealing with winter coat shedding. Alf hasn't been clipped this season, and I am already dreading the start of the hairstorm.

It depends more on the weather conditions, our weather has changed over the years a lot. I turned Nickel away this year for two months so he has been unrugged and not clipped most of Autumn/Winter. I only clipped him today as it fitted in with my schedule, although his work load is not going to be upped for a week or two. If you are worried about clip lines into summer, then take everything off, legs and all.

I was always taught last clip end of Feb. I've clipped clips with lines early March sometimes and they don't show, even on horses that change colour. I don't think many are getting their summer coats at this time of year.

Don't really know. First year ever I have clipped any of my horses or ponies. Had a clip earlier this month and I hope this is it for the winter but we shall see. May clip out the heavy in march/ April as he is a woollie mammoth. Don't really fancy removing hair for 2 months straight ;)
