Our gelding is getting very wooly so wondering what clip for him! He is out 24/7 at grass and is terrified of having his head clipped so any suggestions? Pics would help :) Last year he had a trace clip but legs and head were left on- we rugged him well and he stayed out through all weathers but fancied a change in style :D Thanks xxx

Give him a clip appropriate to his work load, feed and rug accordingly and I think you should be fine :) My lad wintered out with a full clip well rugged last year on no hard feed, can be done!

Mine all live out fully clipped, and rugged as needed. They are a mix of arabs and tb types, so take off whatever you need! The pony also has his legs clipped.

Mr Velvet, with all the options that are available these days rug wise, I dont think its nearly so much of an issue what sort of clip you give them.

It was far more of an issue in the days before neck covers when your choices were canvas with blanket lining or jute stable rugs!

My horses have full clips... They do live in on a night on winter but i think as someone said providing they are well rugged and fed approprately then they should be fine! There are different reasons for full clipping even if they are not in heavy work i.e. one of mine has white legs and after trial and error the best way to stop him getting mud fever is to clip his legs out then they can be washed and dried appropriately and over the last few years since i have done this no mud fever or anything! I would kind of say it's a little early to clip now though - surely your horse hasn't grown its coat through much yet? I have a m&m pony who it a little hairy but no way near clipping stage yet! You'll be clipping again before you know it!

My TB lived out last year with a hunter clip - just legs, saddle patch and half head left. Was rugged well. He wasn't in particularly heavy work over winter but he HATES grooming and spring time is normally torture for us - but not this time. He'll be having the same again this year :D

Our horses also live out 24/7 and i just clip the underside of the neck and around the shoulders to where the girth goes, im soft though i dont like horses living out to be clipped underneath them, it must be really cold in ice or snow.

My pony lives out and he has this sort of clip but he does not normally get clipped till October
