Took Rosie for a hack this afternoon. Had only got down the bottom of the hill when a car came hurtling towards me. Thought the woman had seen me as she braked a little, but as she reached the flat bit, sped up.

I had nowhere to go but stand there, and for a minute I thought she was going to hurtle past, missing me by inches.

Then she slammed the brakes on, mounted the verge and ground to a halt just past me.

I was terrified and exclaimed 2 rude words.

She had her window open and gave me a bit of a mouthful about it - and said the council should put signs up that there might be horses on the road, and then in another breath, said she passed me often

..... She said if the Council wouldn't put up 'beware horse' signs, I should try making some of my own. I was flabbergasted!

She didn't once say she hadn't seen me - I had a hi-viz vest on, and Rosie had her fluorescent boots on, so I knew she had even though we were in the gloom.

So I guess this woman was going to pass me at that speed and only stopped because I yelped and screeched?

I ended up apologising for my swearing just because she didn't seem to want to go away!

She rolled her eyes at me and drove off.

I HATE riding on the road

You almost get killed, and then you have to apologise for it

Eek, sounds like she didn't see you because she wasn't even looking. FFS does she expect beware of the cyclists etc... signs too???

She sounds like a very stupid woman, with very stupid ideas! I don't think I would have apologised for swearing at her though, but I think I'm too stubborn for my own good!

I've had a few incidents similiar - it makes you appreciate the good drivers even more (and off road hacking!).

Glad you and your horse were ok though, after all that!

I would simply report it to your local rural community police officer or the local police station. Ask for an incident number so that you know it is entered in to the system. She may well be a danger to others and at the least need to have her eyes tested. Next time she may kill someone so please report it today in the interest of other horse riders and road users.

How About this sugn:

Beware of:
Horses
Cycilsts
Walkers
Dogs
Cats
Deer
Foxes
Badgers
Rabits
Pheasants
STUPID DRIVERS!

Anything I missed?

goodness! That was a close call, I had a similar thing with a silly man in a milk float. Mine ended up with me ringing the dairy to complain and then the MD of the company simply said it was a busy time of year for the drivers and they had a lot of deliveries to make. Not even a sorry.

So when one of her drivers kills me and my horse it will be okay because it is a busy time of year!

Oh my god, oh no, after such a lovely day out on Saturday then all your confidence on the roads go in one nano second because of a silly women who cannot see the error of her ways

Stupid people - I do wonder at the state of the intelligence of this country - seems like people are getting more daft with each passing year.

Yesterday, whilst towing and I was doing a nice steady 50 in a 60 limit, so not holding up the traffic, I had two cars nearly cause a head on by overtaking - one I saw in time to brake as much as I dared but the other caught me unaware and the car in the other direction had to do an emergency stop and mount the verge!

Lack of intelligence and patience are the two most dangerous things on the road.

Sounds awful, you just can't trust drivers.... which is why I have stopped riding on the road. Im very lucky to have other facilities and really I should ride on the road to keep his feet tough but I just can't face it, it scares me more than anything, even though my horse is fine in traffic!

Drivers like this make me so mad!!!
I was once asked who has the right of way by an angry driver trying to pass me on a really narrow part of the road!! my reply was... er, we do - and she still carried on screaming at us for doing nothing wrong!!

We have a woman like that round our way. One part of our lane is very thin, goes round a corner which you cannot see round at all and has a steep drop away to the left. I was stupidly pleased to see her car sitting at the bottom of the drop away a couple of weeks ago. She's slowed down a lot lately!

Wonder if you got a reg number--if so def report to local police station
The woman was obviously not concentrating on driving
Have had scares ourselves--car actually veered towards us--my son turned horse round to get reg and car stopped turned round and driver came back to apologise
Have also had pony leap up onto grass verge when vehicle got too close--fortunately jockey stayed on
Have had car brake so hard on seeing us driver lost control and ended up sideways on to us--suspect they came rather slower on that road afterwards--they were actually more upset than we were
Reported one tractor driver with slurry cart for speeding up on single track road after I put horse into gateway--he came so close horse tried to leap into field from standstill--he was banned from using this road except for access.
None of incidents recent but you never forget

I expect so.... and maybe she should have a sign on the back of her toilet door telling her to wipe her a*se!

I mean, honestly, does she need a f**king sign for everything?!!

She obviously did it deliberately - you should report her to the police - did you get her number?

Next time, it could be someone else on a pony that panics, or the stupid woman could mis-time her screeching halt and hit you or someone else. You MUST report her.

I might be tempted to make a sign in your place, "Beware of idiot woman driver in so and so coloured car!"
That would at least make her realise how dangerous her driving is.

Good idea - but she might run me over on purpose this time!!!

I would of made her a sign, one with two fingers

Think she would have got out and punched me!!

Unfortunately I didn't get a single bit of her reg number. She was in a dark green people carrier - but I couldn't even tell you what make.

I was so stunned by her attitude and face - her eyes were nearly popping out of her head presumably because I dare question her shocking driving and then her reasoning, that I didn't even think to get her number. I just wanted to go.

She said she passes me often - but I don't remember, I know most of the people down the lane, the ones that DO slow and the ones that don't.

I'll look out for her in future.

I might make up the sign as suggested: Beware of road users!!!

Argh, don't drivers like that just make you SO angry!! I had a guy with a flatbed trailer accelerate towards me so he must have gone past at about 55-60 mph.

I'm sorry but when you learn to driver are you not taught to be constantly aware of possible hazards on the road, OBEY the speed limits etc. Why is it that once people have been drivers for a while they seem to think its ok for them to drive in a zombie state whereby anything going wrong is CLEARLY not their fault!

She said she passes you often but at the same time isn't aware there may be horses around? Hmmmmm....white jackets?

Precisely....

...but she says it's the Councils' fault....there are no signs warning her that there might be horses on the road....so that absolves her from any responsilbilty that she might have been driving too fast!

I mean she's not psychic is she?

She's seen me on the road before apparently, but she didn't know I was going to be there on THAT day.

How was she supposed to know?

Grhhhh!!! People, honestly! It's always someone elses fault!

I think the new driving tests should include a common sense test!
