Hi,

Had a nasty moment yesterday. Horse was unloaded on a carpark between two roads when we heard a fire engine coming. My sister went out to the road in her riding gear with reflective on to try to alert them that there was a horse and hope that they would turn their siren off.
They did not understand what she was doing, consequently I was left holding a panicking horse that so nearly broke away from me. I was determinded not to let go and I now have a very pulled arm!

So, my question is, what could we have done to avoid this? Bearing in mind we could hear it coming, but due to the layout of the road they could not see us till it was too late.

The horse calmed down very quickly, he's so chilled, but at 17hh you know about it if he does get scared!

I dont think theres anything you can do about it if they dont see you/understand what friend is saying.

If you are in a public place where they wont expect to see a horse and they are on the public road, it's just one of those things you have to cope with as best as. Like when my OH was hacking out (on our young 17hher)and a WWII tank came trundling along the road towards them.....riding out has risks not all of which can be eradicated.

Glad you are ok apart from looking like Mrs Tickle from the Mister Men :-)))

PS maybe get some emergency siren noises on a tape and play them to horse to desensitise.

You are right, thanks for saying that, I have just been beating myself up with 'what ifs'

The tank must have been interesting!!!

LOL at Mrs Tickle!!! I'm going to tell my work colleauges that!
