Clostridial Enteritis. Any experience?

Was wondering if any of you have come across a case of suspected clostridial enteritis in your horses/ponies? If so, what was the outcome?

We don't routinely test for clostridia bacteria/infection in this country, but when everything else comes back negative the vets tend to assume this to be the cause.

Not in my horses but my cat had this as a kitten - he had the most foul diarrhoea you ever came across. Took ages to diagnose. He had loads of antibiotics including metronidazole I believe and made a good recovery.

A friend also caught clostridium whilst backpacking in Asia. she took a long time to recover and has been left with a "sensitive" stomach and is allergic to wheat rather like someone with coeliac disease.

Our mare was diagnosed with Colic and underwent surgery at Leahurst. All they found was an inflamed area of enteritis in the gut.

She sadly had a seizure not long after standing from the surgery and was left blind and brain damaged so had to be PTS.

The vets seem to think she now had Clostridial Enteritis (but they can't be sure as it's not tested for in this country apparently) and this may have caused toxins to cause her seizure.

Interestingly she didn't have diarrhoea. She did two very normal poohs before she got to Leahurst, and a wee and still have an appetite.

We had a broodmare many years ago who was the first case of clostridial enteritis that Leahurst had ever treated.

She made it through the colic surgery and was just about to come home when she suffered complications and had to be PTS.
