Hi, I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction with regard to this issue. I met a family yesterday who was looking for help working with their horses. I'm going to be advising them that I am not comfortable exercising/working the horses until they've been seen & given the green light by both a vet and a farrier. They haven't been seen by either in a long time, and I noticed several issues while I was there. I administered de-wormer because they were too afraid to, so who knows how long overdue it was... when I was cleaning the hooves, the soles were very soft & were scraping right off... there was even a spot on the front (toward the toe), right side of one hoof that was very hardened.... it was as if mud/whatever had cemented itself. I kept wanting to scrape it off b/c it looked just like the rest of the dirt, etc. but couldn't. They also have bot fly eggs...

But the main concern I had was with regard to one horse's cloudy/milky eye. It was the right side of the eye, and covered probably 1/4 of the eye. The daughter told me it used to be worse, and they sprayed some kind of acid water (!?! don't know a thing about that, but it sounds pretty awful) and it improved substantially... and has now come back.

I'm trying to figure out if it could be uveitis, or if anyone has heard of anything else it might be. I'm trying to find out as much as I can (if anything) before I contact the family to give my recommendation/advice.

Thanks so much

I would just treat as a conjunctivitis first as its been neglected so either anti bs from vet or if that won't go then golden eye ointment but you need to check there are no scratches to the eye as treating can result in scarring of the eye and loss of vision.

Eyes are one thing that I will not treat myself, other than mild irritation due to flies, this is something a vet needs to look at as the longer it is left the worse the outcome could be. It is possibly ulcerated and putting off the shelf treatments in there could make it worse.

Hi, A horse at my yard had a clouding in his eye that came and went, Was given steroid cream by vet. Eye never improved and vet reffered owner to eye specialist. After investigation turned out to be an auto imunne diesese, couldnt be cured but was managed with drops every other day. I know this was a rare case as specialist done a case study on him.

I would say it's either uveitis or an ulcer that is healing. Either way it needs urgent vet advice as they require regular drops/medications.

Definitely agree with urgent vet visit. If it is uveitis he may need uv mask, google guardian mask. Exposure to sunlight can be very painful if it is acute uveitis.

My horse has Uevitis but due to prompt treatment his eye never went cloudy. I'd get the vet as a matter of urgency. If it's is Uevitis and the eye is damaged then I would imagine the horse has been having flare ups for a while and has gone cloudy through inappropriate treatment.
