Posting this on behalf of a friend,

my friends horse moved to a new yard a few days ago, this evening I got a very worried call from her telling me that her horses eyes are not extremely cloudy but are looking cloudy! And has had a really runny nose, not the normal type of runny nose. It constantly drips out snot! She said that he was coughing a little bit, but not very much and this horse does have a dry cough so I wouldn't say coughing is one of the systems, but it might be?

I didnt know know what advice to give her apart from call the vet! She said she would first thing tomorrow morning, in the mean time can anyone tell me what this might be? As you can imagine she is extremely worried and wants to know what her horse may be coming down with so we can both hurriedly look it up on the web! Has anyone experienced things like this before?? Thanks for all your help in advance, and saying call the vet isn't helpful as we already know that and she is doing that first thing tomorrow, we are just interested to know what it might be and if anyone has experienced this before! Thank you in advance x

You've posted this everywhere - and none of us can give you anything but an educated guess! You haven't mentioned the horse's age, or if he is vaccinated against 'flu, for example. Chances are it's a minor respiratory infection he's picked up because he doesn't have immunity to a bug floating around his new yard, but worse case might be they have a Strangles carrier and your friend's horse has no immunity. The vet will be able to give you a better idea once he's examined the horse, checked its vitals etc.

As you can imagine we are both extremely stressed and worried so please if you're going to be rude don't comment at all, you say that no one can help in the first five minutes of it being up!! You have clearly not lost a very loved horse, if you had I would have expected you to be a lot more appreciating of our stress and worries! I have posted this everywhere in every single forum I can as I care a lot for this horses well being and if that bothers you so much them I'm sorry, do what everyone else is doing and ignore it! Kapesh? as you can imagine neither of us will be sleeping tonight! I don't mean to sound rude or offensive, I am just extremely stressed I am not normally a rude person but today everything has fallen on top of me and un appreciated comments are not helping!

right a call to vet tomorrow. talk to them and if ness get them out. We all hate vet bills but sometimes its cheaper to get them out and get a prob sorted than second guessing till point horse poorly and needing big bills. let us know how he is :) x

For crying out loud, I wasn't being rude - I was trying to help - but the information you gave was so slim that wasn't easy. And yes, I've lost a number of much loved horses over the years - my stallion just before Christmas, mares, and foals! Be assured they all showed stronger symptoms than this horse - who PROBABLY has a minor infection. He's not going to get much worse before the vet comes tomorrow and the vet will be able to get the vitals you've given us no clue of! Be patient!

Like I said I'm sorry, I'm extremely stressed and you're not helping! I have owned this horse for 12 years and he is 12 years old! I even bred him, sold him to my friend last Sunday and I get a phone call saying he's looking ill and she's going to call the vet. I have grown up with this horse he is my life even if my friend called me up saying he's coughing more then usual I would be having a panic attack! Not to mention a lot of other things that are going on such as one of my much loved horses getting put down last week who has been in my family since I was 1 year old and learnt to ride on him and still haven't got over that and don't think I will for a few years!

Thank you, yes they're a pain but all worth it!! Would spend billions on my horses if I had to, not that I have that sort of money! Wish I did ;) Thanks for being so lovely and reassuring really helps! Thank you a lot! X

Thank you!! X hope your horse is all alright now.. Sounds like such a strong one!!

You should NOT be posting everywhere about this - you should be getting the vet out urgently ! I just hate posts like this, horses are living beings and if their health goes wrong GET A VET OUT do not go on forums saying you are "stressed". URGH.

You can't be that worried as you haven't called a vet yet.... why wait til morning if you are worried?

If you had read it, he is no longer my horse at my yard. The new owner called me today saying he doesn't look well. I told her to phone the vet she said she would do it first thing tomorrow morning. What more can I do?! I have asked her if she can call the vet now but obviously she can't excuse after excuse, what more can I do?!

Especially since this allegedly began on Sunday.. and here we are on Thurs night!

The allergy did not begin on Sunday the lady brought him on Sunday the allergy started up today! I was phoned at 7:00 being told all this new information. He is. Ow at a yard 2 hours away from where I am I have young children at home I can't exactly leave them to get to this horse that is not mine and call the vet out can I? I've asked his owner if she could do it but she said no. What more can I do?! He was absolutely fine leaving my yard on Sunday and as I have been told has been absolutely fine up till today.

he's not my horse? I can't demand his owner to do that can I? I have told her that's what she should do, she can't. What more can I possibly do then sit here in a nervous wreck waiting for a call from her to let me know how he's doing! This is a public forum I can post it wherever I like.

You can call the vet yourself and pay the bill. Or you can accept that you have sold the horse and have no real say on its welfare any more.

You must know, surely, if you are an experienced owner, that it is pointless asking on a forum what a snotty nose might be? . It's a snotty nose. There is nothing that you can look up online that will be the slightest use to you tonight. The vet needs to judge whether it is bacterial and can be helped with antibiotics, viral and must be left to run its course, or allergic and so be treated some other way.

Ok. Well tell your friend that eye injuries tend to be very serious in horses, and together with a runny nose, could mean a nasty infection which at the least could be painful.

I am sorry to be blunt, but if it was my lad, the vet would have been out already.

However, as it's not your horse, you cannot force the issue. Which is incredibly frustrating for anyone trying to give you (not your friend) advice via a forum.

I would happily do that if I knew the vet as this is a new vet and i unfortunately don't have the emergency number, it's not the runny nose I was worried about it was more the fact that she said he's eyes looked all cloudy and one of my mums horses turned blind and it all started out with cloudy eyes :/ I have asked her what colour the snot is, she said she can't remember but she doesn't think it's clear :(
Thanks for your help! Hope it all works out, his owner is ignoring my texts and phone calls now. New I shouldn't have sold him... Wish he was still here with me cuddled up in his bit fat rug in his cosy stable <3 only been a few days and find myself crying every night because he's not with me. I'm so pathetic get way to attached to my horses.

For heaven's sake! Vets are listed in the book and all of them put their emergency contact number on their answerphone message.

I've told her all that, and if he was my lad the vet would have been out at 4:00 this afternoon!! But unfortunately he's not anymore :( hopefully, this is just me overreacting and it will all be fine in the morning. Never thought selling a horse would be so stressful. I don't think I'm ever going to sell any of my horses again. Even if I have to sell my house to keep them alive ;) x

i totally understand how you feel.
at the beginning of the thread it sounded like you actually had some sort of control over the situation. really hope all turns out okay. it could be something as simple as too much dust around to stress to strangles :( I really hope he's okay. I really want to say try and relax and do something to take your mind off the situation as there's no point stressing yourself out over something you cant (sadly) do anything about..but i know this is a lot easier said than done. Fingers crossed something is sorted asap x

Direct your "friend" to this forum so she can see other people are saying get vet now, or she may be posting the horse died tomorrow...

I've sent her about 50 texts and called her about 1000 times. She hasn't answered a single one. :( I've been calling her about every five minutes, I've tried texting her, Facebook messaging her I don't know what to do! She's probably tired out of her wits of me!
