Clover is very high in protein, and in small doses doesnt cause a problem, but large quantities can cause swellings in the throat area, and also in the udder area of mares, also being high in eostragen can cause raging seasons.
We have seen all these symptoms on our yard in varying degrees when horses have been put on a certain feild that is full of clover, all ended up with the runs, bloated and very gassy.
Be careful if you are feeding a high protein deit too as the combination caused one mare to colic, and another to tie up.
All these problems have gone since rempoving them off this feild.
Best way to remove clover is to spray with an appropriate chemical weed killer, or you can lessen it by fertilising the field with a high nitrogen fertiliser as it causes reverse osmosis, in the clover and dies. (at least that is what I was told by one of our agricultural field reps)
