Hi, i went riding (with a polypad and sheepskin saddle thing under the saddle) it was chilly when we came back so i was unable to wash him down. Now after that day he has like hairs clumped together on his back. it looks like there clumped by sweat, however i have tried brushing them out and have given him 2 thorough baths however they either stay there or a whole clump comes off. :( they are sometimes sore for him when i try to brush it out and have no clue what to do. :/ if i clip him, he still needs a saddle patch which is where the problem is  any ideas what to do?

Is the saddle ill-fitting? I would get it checked out, either that you have padded it out so much, a polypad and sheepskin pad is quite alot, that the saddle is fitting incorrectly due to this? After that I wouldn't know what to suggest but if you say it's sore when you try to brush it out I can only assume saddle is rubbing/fitting incorrectly :( Hope this helps :)

My horse when he was badly beaten up by another horse ended up with lots of hair clumped like this, it looked a bit like rain scald, but obviously wasnt, i assumed it was something to do with the bruiseing some how affecting the hair, which would tie in with a badly fitting saddle causing bruising on your horse.

My mare has this on back, its causes by sweating under the saddle, ive took the sheepskin half pad off and just use a saddle cloth and prolite pad now for the summer, but to get the clumped hair out its just grooming a little of it out each day so not to make it sore, a rubber curry comb is good in anti clockwise direction. There may be some bald bits for few weeks, but Pennys is growing back now. I did not ralize how hot the lovely sheepskin pad gets on days like now!

My mare has this, was due to sweating under her numnah and rugs! vet advised to bath with diluted hibi-scrub a few times a week, its cleared up now :)

A poly pad and sheepskin is alot of padding and could drastically alter the saddle fit. i agree, get the fit checked asap.

Aside from pressure sores it could also be bacteria in the hair follicles. Make sure all numnahs are kept very clean (dont wash wool with powder- only liquid so the fibres dont clog), dilute hibiscrub the back and make sure you warm up/cool down well enough.
