So, was jumping my TB tonight - only about 1ft off the ground! - and he overreached. Basically all his four feet landed in the same place! :(

He felt immediatley lame so I jumped off and took him in. He pulled off a shoe and sliced his heel open (ouch!) So I cleaned it up with Hibiscrub and bandaged for the night.

The cut is about 2 inches long across the back of his heel. It is quite deep but not deep enough that the skin is flapping off..

Just looking for a bit of advice as to what treatment I should be doing? Bandaging/not bandaging, turnout/box rest, creams/gels etc... I haven't ever had to deal with an overreach. He is lame but this could be down to the shoe being off (Crappy TB feet ) or could be down to this slice. It was bloody but not bleeding out of the cut.

Any advice will be gratefully received!

cold hose it for as long as you can as soon as you can! I have a little mare who sliced the bulb of her heel and the wound must have had a speck of dirt trapped in it. After 2 years of it healing and then bursting open again she had to have a large chunk of the bulb removed. If you can run water through the wound for as long as she can bear it there is less chance of this happening.
