Clunking stifle

Hi Guys,

Can anyone give me any advice or pointers on the above.

The last time I had the physio out for my 10yr old, 17'2 Oldenburg Gelding she said she noticed that his right stifle was clunking after leg stretches. I have also noticed he has been bucking when asked to canter on the right rein, but he is fine on the left. Obviously on the right rein his clunky stifle is the weight bearing and drive on the inside.

I have owned him for a year now and after a few teething problems at the start, things have been ok for a while now. I have just recently had a £1500 vet bill for drugs to aid slight arthritis in his spine as he was showing cold back syptoms and that is now sorted but, I am worried I will have to send him off to the vets again for this and financially I'm a bit freaked out!

He has lost muscle in the last 6 months due to the cold back issues and I wondering if that could be what has started this as I had definitely not noticed it previously.

Anyway sorry for waffling on, any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

I have something similar with my ISH - he has been diagonosed with a SI and also his patellar ligaments are catching on the the stifles, the latter manifested itself as difficulty in canter trans - bucking/kicking out and being cold backed (not dipping away but arching and reluctance to move forward). Sounds horrendous but apparently according to the specialist the ligament problem is very easy to sort out!
 
Really, what advice did they give you? That's great to hear it may be a really simple think to sort out.
What specialist did you have?

Rainbow Equine Hospital in North Yorkshire, TBH you probably have the best equine experts in the SE!! I am in the process of getting the horse fit as they cannot do the procedure on an unfit horse, once he is back in full work he will have the ligaments injected with iodine which apparently causes scarring which tightens them - sounds simples hope it works!!
 
Thank you sooo much for that, you have described exactly the symptoms my boy has had since I got him a year ago but, we thought it was his back.
He is snatchy with his back feet for picking out especially the clunky one, he humps his back when you first get on and sometimes doesn't want to go forward at all, and he has been bucking into canter transitions on the right rein, he bronced me off last wed when practising a prelim dressage test so had done 2 or 3 canter transitions on that rein and he'd obviously had enough!!
I will chat to my vet tomorrow.
