hi does anyone have a clydesdale?i have seen one i like and want to know if they are good doers or do they cost alot to feed?i have heard a few people that they cost alot to feed and wanted 2 kno your experience

We had two on the yard I was in, they were pretty good doers, certainly cost a lot less than my TB to feed. They lived out with access to ad-lib hay and were never up or down.

i had one in Scotland wasn't that expensive think my warm blood eats more tbh there gentle giants (you get few bad one as with everything) but they will consume same as a big horse

I had a hann x clydie and loved her but boy could she eat

We are on our second one - best of the heavies and wonderful natures and great to ride. Very steady hacks but not plods. We did a bit of everything on Cairo, he loved his jumping and Farra has started and showing lots of joy for jumping if not too much talent yet.

You need to avoid fast work on hard ground or too much jumping and again not on hard surfaces as they are bit heavy beasts. That said, thundering along on a clydie is an amazing experience.

Cairo was 16.3 and Farra is going to be about 17 hands (only 5 and still growing).

Stables - as they are not huge are fine in a 12 x 12.

Rugs - we use 7' but go for ones with a good neck and deep belly.

Shoes - Cairo was shoed until later life then went barefoot. Farra is barefoot. They have good hard feet and are not in that much work so don't wear them down. Shoeing can be a lot more than most horses and not all farriers will take them on.

Tack - for our two, extra full brides and wide fitting saddles - both again are not huge examples. Only thing I had to have custom made was Cairo's western bridle and bit as could not find one big enough, but saddle was ok to find.

Feed

Their diet is

Summer - on sparce grazing

Twice a day

Big scoop (stubbs) of simple systems rough stuff and same of just grass.

1/4 scoop of fibre nuts, and same of speedi beet

Black sunflower seeds, instant linseed, benevit vit supplement, salt, brewers yeast and clivers (last two are for SI), joint supplement (preventation as big horses and close behind). Big handful of carrots - essential clydesdale food.

Winter is the same but we add a ball with a scoop of nuts and double the speedibeet. Hay I feed adlib, but as a rule they get through 1/2 - 3/4 of a bale and on the very rare occasion when freezing, they did manage a bale in 24 hours when there was no turnout. I feed cheap hay - clydesdales are good doers and rich hay is to be avoided.

My 15.1 gypsy cob has the same as my clydesdale apart from a little less hay, and both clydes have been cheaper to feed than my TBs.

Only con to them is that they don't live as long as some, and can need expensive treatment and less work from 15/16.

Cairo was 22 when he had to be pts and many don't get past 25. They also do suffer from joint problems - Cairo developed low ringbone at 18/19 and did start to get very stiff in his last year.

If you are wanting more of a riding clydie, try to find a good old fashioned work type as they are a bit smaller - up to 17 hands and less close behind. Farra being show bred has a finer coat, more leggy and very very close behind, hence the joint supplement now. I would personally not want anything over 18 hands - too near to god and not much use to man as one old boy told me.

Hope you find one and they are lovely as our two.
